Morgan,in a very interesting manner succeeds in telling the untold story about Muslims cultural and intellectual history and there numerous contributions in math, numbers, algebra, medicine, public health, aviation, designs, leadership. These contributions helped seed the European Renaissance and enabled many aspects of modern Western and global civilization.
I particularly liked the manner in which the author connects the present with the past, the book is well referenced both from religious and history texts. I highly recommend this book for all interested in gaining better understanding regarding Islam and Muslims.

This is a book I find it difficult to rate highly enough, if there was a six stars category it would be needed.

Western ignorance of Islam is a huge impediment to our understanding of the events of these countries and perpetrates all kinds of misunderstandings. It is not helped by the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and its involvement in terrorism. Books like Samuel Huntingdon's "Clash of Clvilisations" too have and continue to perpetuate misunderstandings, as the UN has recognised in its call for a "dialogue amongst civilisations", a call initiated first by the Muslim world.

Hans Kung states cogently that peace between peoples is only possible if there is peace between religions, and that such a peace is only possible if there is a situation of respectful dialogue between ... Read More

This is a very good and thorogh book which highlights the basic differences between what abou el Fadl describes as 'moderates' and 'puritans'. The first part of the book gives a good basic introduction on the history of puritan ideology and the way in which it spread to Saudi Arabia and eventually became the official ideology of Saudi. Though the book can at times become redundant and repititive it is in general a very good read and quite informative. I do wish that, in order to back up his arguments, abou el Fadl had included the names of some of the scholars that he considered 'moderate' and 'puritan'. Also if you are looking for strong arguments in favor of the moderate views then you will have to look elsewhere as abou el Fadl does not go into too much detail (as expected in such an introductory book).

This book addresses an important topic, about which every "westerner" should know something; I looked forward to reading and digesting it. Unfortunately, although the book begins well, the reader is soon lost in a mishmash of disorganized information, apparently assembled with little or no thought given to logical structure. I would only recommend the book to someone who is prepared to construct his own outline after multiple attempts to read it.

I like to read old wisdom books - as things change things stay the same, and you never know what useful tid bit you might pick up.

This one is interesting becasue its muslim. And you can learn a lot about fundamental muslim views of caste systems and philosophies.

Im not a scholar, so I will leave informed scholarly analysis of this book to qualified individuals. The books coverage of the development and structure of civilization is quite fascinating.

I was struck by teh obvious racism. Black people are considered as smart as animals unless theyre muslim.

I was struct by the hipocracy. THe book attacks philosophy and deductive logic because it makes a farce of the spiritual foundation of islam. But the author uses the same logic to critique astrology, divination, ... Read More

16.Muhammad: A Biography of the Prophet by: Karen Armstrong

Books : Muhammad: A Biography of the Prophet
An enjoyable read but Armstrong contradicts and fails to draw distinctions. For instance, she uses Secular West and Christianity interchangeably, as if they are the same entity(I personally enjoyed her scathing remarks about the latter). She also goes way out of her way to be an apologist, instead maintaining the necessary objective distance. But all in all, I feel better informed.

Books : The Venture of Islam: Conscience and History in a World Civilization (3-volume set)
After reading Mr. Netman's excellent review, I will only add that, for a better understanding of Islam (neither flattering nor biased against it), I would suggest reading the following works, it is worth it:

A) ASSESSMENTS OF ISLAM: 1) The best, impartial, wise: "Islam. History, present, future" by Hans Küng . 2) Moderate Islam at its best: "The Great Theft : Wrestling Islam from the Extremists" by Khaled M. Abou El Fadl; and 3) Harsh but well argued: "Muslims in the West: Redefining the Separation of Church & State" by Sami Awad Aldeeb Abu-Sahlieh;

B) WOMEN AND ISLAM. 4) A good reference book: "Women In Islam: An Anthology From The Qu'ran And Hadiths" by Nicholas Awde; and 5) Autobiography of a courageous woman: "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She is a controversial thinker with a very interesting life. ... Read More

This volume presumes some knowledge of interfaith studies, and, in that sense, some knowledge of how Judaism differs from Christianity, but it is not just for Jews. Instead, this volume is probably the best concise overview of Islam available in English.

While one may differ with the judgments of the author here and there, he is unfailingly balanced and at least references all major contrary opinions. One cannot do everything in roughly 250 pages [plus a glossary of Arabic terms, a bibliography for further reading, a table of biblical and koranic references and a good index], but this volume covers more territory better and more clearly than any other comparable volume.

The author is a scholar of the best sort and should be congratulated on his achievement.

Books : Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam (American Empire Project)
Robert Dreyfuss, an American journalist who covers national security for Rolling Stone magazine, has written a splendid book, part of the very useful American Empire Project. He shows how the US state has followed the British Empire's example of funding and backing right-wing fundamentalist Islamic activist groups to defeat Arab nationalism.

From 1885 on, the British state fostered a pan-Islamic alliance against Russia and the Ottoman Empire. It also backed Ibn Saud, leading to the creation of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemites, who became kings of Iraq and Transjordan, the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamic fundamentalist party, and Haj Amin, the mufti of Jerusalem.

After World War Two, the US state took over Britain's role. In the 1950s it used the Muslim Brotherhood against President Nasser of Egypt and Prime Minister ... Read More

Professor Karsh's "Islamic Imperialism" is a splendid work that comprehensively outlines the sweeping, bloody history of Islamic conquest since the time of the Prophet. Karsh does an excellent job of illustrating Muhammad's practical 7th century concerns that were ultimately resolved by his pragmatic blending of extreme monotheism with imperialistic politics and tribal customs. Thus all matters of mankind, whether spritual, moral or political were in the control of the self-appointed Prophet of Allah. Karsh gives many examples of how resistance to Islamic supremacy has been brutally crushed from developmental times to the present.
Professor Karsh marches the reader through 1,700 years of Islamic efforts to dominate civilizations and how government and religion in Islamic societies has become hopelessly intertwined. "Islamic Imperialism" ... Read More
