I bought this book because I am interested in all things New York (ok, I live in the Big Apple), and because Hamill appeared several times on the PBS series about the history of the city. He is a thoughtful guy, and his knowledge of the history of New York allows him to weave a complex story that spans centuries and focuses on some of the least known episodes, leaving the well known ones as background. Except, of course, for the finale, which deals with 9/11 (and is surprisingly personal and well done). You do have to suspend your disbelief when it comes to how exactly the central character gets to live for centuries, therefore experiencing the city's history first hand, and I did find the many references to Irish folklore and magic a bit too much. Still, it is a heck of a book that will keep ... Read More

32.The Complete Tales of Uncle Remus by: Joel Chandler Harris

Books : The Complete Tales of Uncle Remus
This book, and the Disney movie that came from it, Song of the South, is often avoided because of language and the status of the blacks in the story (slaves), but it is an insight into the times and the mores of those times, no matter how unenlightened, and the language is used as it was--descriptive; not in a necessarily derogatory fashion. Not right, but accurately.

Essentially, the stories, however, are AESOP type fables promoting the lessons of living in society. The book is a wonderful glimps into history and shows a curious side of the slavery issue where those not deemed equals were in fact entrusted to help in tha raising of the children.

Remove someof the language, and consider the dialog as simply an accent and not a derogatory statement, and you have a kindly old ... Read More

I love LKH, she is a very talented writer. I have fallen in love with her books. Warning there is no sex in any of these books and I still love them. I have never thought that would be possible. If you are an LKH fan having where it started is important.

My husband and I have decidedly different tastes in books. He reads history and historical fiction. I read mostly fantasy and am an Arthur legend freak. He had read virtually all of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpes books and quite a lot of Cornwell's other historical fiction when he picked up my copies of The Arthur Books and proceeded to read all three.
I loved the Arthur trilogy and have read a lot of the Shapes books. Cornwell's books are good reads. Period.

This is one of the best adventures in Arthurian myth, the Arthur books by this author. I was able to rent it at a local library. Involves more political intrigue than children's fantasy. Most Arthur film adaptions have gotten an R rating.

Anyone says that the movies are preferrable to this needs to learn how to read (that said, I'm a huge of the movies--they are cinematic masterpieces).

But this is classic fantasy at its best. Every other fantasy author to come along, as great as they are, still have not managed to create the depth of what Tolkien created.

Stemming from the world he created for "The Hobbit", Tolkien writes a truly epic story of good vs evil, friendship, and loyalty. All simple, wonderful themes that speak to us whether we live in Middle-Earth or the real world. He has managed to great an entire culture that the reader finds himself caring for, a world that needs to be protected at all costs.

Tolkien is a master of plot. While the story isn't unnecessarily complex, it is broad and you have to hand ... Read More

Books : The Lord of the Rings (Movie Art Cover)
This has to be one of the greatest contributions to English literature in a long, long time. It is a twentieth century classic.

Tolkien has managed to create an entirely real, tangible, and absolutely enchanting world through sheer characterization, detail, and passion for a people and a place, even if he created them.

The plot itself is entirely epic and exciting, perfect for the people that like action galore. But it also has everything else: great characters, humor, romance, charm. It's very real, even if they are hobbits and elves and whatnot. They'r real people, and Tolkien has made sure of that.

The story is also timeless in that this is simply a great battle between good and evil. I know it's a plot that has been done countless times, but it's still a great plot and I dare say Tolkien was ... Read More

I, like many others, really liked Clan of the Cave Bear. I liked Valley of Horses up til the latter half when the wanton and repetitive, graphic sex began. I mean, I don't mind an occasional sex scene in a book, but this got to the point of monotony. It continues in The Mammoth Hunters which I was unable to finish. I found myself skipping over the sex scenes to get to the plot which became repetitive in itself. The author tries too hard to make Ayla into a superwoman and Jondalar into the ultimate ladies man. Then when they get together, they become bumbling idiots who can't even look at each other without jumping in the sack. I was so disappointed with the direction the author decided to go with this series.

This book is an absolute treasure. I was initially uninterested in reading this book, primarily because a small section of it, from the Norton Anthology of World Literature, was assigned reading in one of my college literature classes. I always hate reading stuff that is assigned to me. However, as I started reading the first few pages I was immediately hooked. When class let out that day I RAN to the nearest bookstore and bought a copy of the entire book. It was incredible from the first page to the last. This book is definitely a keeper.

Books : Lost in a Good Book: A Thursday Next Novel
This is the second book in the Thursday Next series of literary mysteries by Jasper Fforde. If you haven't read the first one, The Eyre Affair, you will find spoilers in this review, so go check that out first - I recommend it!

After vanquishing Acheron Hades and giving Jane Eyre a better ending, Thursday Next is dealing with uncomfortable amounts of fame, but is very happy to be finally married to Landon, the love of her life, and expecting his child. She doesn't anticipate further adventures, but what she wants is very different from what she gets when the Goliath Corporation kidnaps her husband and threatens her into returning to the world of books. Apprenticed to Miss Havisham of Great Expectations, Thursday must re-learn how to jump into dangerous texts in order to rescue her husband and the world.

I have to say, ... Read More
