I'll be frank when I say that my opinion of this book is biased since it combines my love of Egypt, archaeology, and women who like to roll around in the dirt. But even so, this was a great book. The characters, the setting, the mystery (although none too mysterious) all really worked for me. Enough to the point where they managed to overcome my usual dislike of diary style writing and period language. I'll definitely be picking up the next one...as soon as I'm done with this review in fact!

The story starts out with our hero, self-described "middle aged spinster", Amelia Peabody coming into a considerable inheritance. With no husband, would be suitor, or close family to stop her, she takes her money and embarks on a traveling holiday to the place she most wants to visit: ... Read More

I just finished reading this light and enjoyable book (though the subject matter is anything but light). Pleasant way to spend a few hours. But the author really overdid it with the use of the word "acrid." In the first seventy pages, it was used six or seven times. Then there was a long section where I didn't notice it, and then near the end it appeared two or three times. After the first two times, I mentioned to my family. We all got highly amused by me calling out the page numbers every time I found it again. But that's a minor niggle, worth taking off half a star.

This book is written in the typical florid style that's used for Regency romance novels, and of course Devlin seems like he could easily be a hero of a romance novel. I take off a half star for the always-done ... Read More

Learned and fast because rarely does someone so intelligent find a way to jam so much thought into such a fast plot. THis book continues to be the best introduction to Eco's fiction, the one you should read before the others (and then you'll want to read the others too, but I'm not sure that the process would work the other way).

This book is a historical mystery set in the later part of Queen Victoria's reign. The world-building in this book is excellent as is the pacing. The problems Emily faces flow out of the historical culture (i.e. the story isn't simply a modern mystery occurring in a historical setting). The characters are interesting and change realistically throughout the book. The romance in the story develops slowly. For those who care, there is kissing, but no sex.

Maisie Dobbs is a really fun read and I love the way Jacqueline Winspear brings the era to life. I find I learn a great deal about life in England after World War I as I am led through the unraveling of the "case" Maisie is working on. Her characters are finely detailed, the pace is rapid and the book is hard to put down. Bravo!

I found this a ponderous tome that was mostly unexciting until very late, after Lord Cromwell's investigator Shardlake has revelations, both in his faith and his sleuthing. The question then becomes whether he will survive. The author has done a lot of historical research on the period (a lawyer with a history Ph.D.) and it shows to good effect, smoothly worked into this view of the Dissolution of a Dissolute monastery. We come out with a good understanding of the religious conflicts of the day (early in the Protestant Reformation), and some of the questionable means by which they were resolved.

Sansom's mystery and characters, however, left me cold and uninvolved. Almost everyone hides a dirty history. They are already fallen, so what if one is a killer, too? Shardlake is simply uptight, irritable, ... Read More

I actually bought this book for my aunt, because I knew she would enjoy the charming Maisie Dobbs and the wonderful writing of the author. I look forward to the next Maisie and I will read it as slowly as the others, to savor the rich descriptions and characters. The descriptions of city and countryside settings and of time periods, as each book moves forward in time, is a door to the past for me.

I had not read a book by this author before but "Pardonable Lies" was recommended to me. I found this book hard to follow. I kept getting the characters confused for the most part. There was too much misc. info. surrounding the plot. I will not buy another novel by this author. Very disappointed. The characters came and went with little to remind you of where you had read about them before. Will not recommend.

This is the fourth book in the series. I've only read the first and fourth books. Here, I loved the Ramses character. He is an 8 year old boy with a genius mind and great luck. I did not like the way his mother cut him off so much and refused to listen to him. She was also jealous of his ability to find entrances to tombs and other archaeological finds before she could. I lost some respect for her in this book because of that. It was still a good book, but I preferred the first book in the series: Crocodile on the Sandbank.

CAUTION SPOILERS: In this book, we learn that Sethos, the master criminal, loves Amelia and plans to kidnap her and keep her secluded until she learns to love him back. He appears in different disguises in this book.

Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: none. Setting ... Read More

This book is about a genius teenage girl, recently orphaned, who meets Sherlock Holmes as he's studying bees. Well, she actually almost walks over him. So begins a rather clever story. Mary and Holmes think alike, which means that the amazing Sherlock Holmes finally has a friend with whom he can share his adventures and care about, as opposed to look down upon.

The story is narrated by Mary Russell and concerns her first adventures with the great detective, including finding a kidnapped child and eluding a brilliant bomber. It is told over the course of a few years as Mary attends Oxford and is taught by Holmes himself in the art of detecting.

I really liked this story and plan to start reading the second in the series, "A Monstrous Regiment of Women," as soon as I finish this review. Mary does share ... Read More
