I am one of these people who discovered Billy Collins when I bought his previous poetry collection, "The Trouble With Poetry". I loved that collection so much I re-read it again as soon as I had finished reading it the first time around. Finally, a poet who made sense! I eagerly awaited publication of his new book, but I was very disappointed with "Ballistics". The book isn't bad, so many readers might enjoy it, but Collins comes across as full of himself and his witty remarks fall flat.

The poems in the first two "chapters" of the book are quite ordinary, I felt, after the first signature poem about the reader, which was very good (Collins always starts his collections with such a poem). I was shocked when I realized that the poem "Ballistics", which gives the book its title, ... Read More

2.The Prophet by: Kahlil Gibran

Books : The Prophet
These days, Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" often gets dismissed as "hippie" literature. Yet, this book had been a bestseller LONG before the 1960s. Originally published in 1923, it almost instantly became a hit and even did well through the Great Depression. Today, Gibran's claim to fame is being the third best-selling poet of our time, behind Shakespeare and Lao Tzu... and pretty much entirely based on sales of this book. When his publisher, Alfred Knopf was asked who the audience for the book was, he flippantly dismissed the question. "It Must be a cult," he retorted.

Yet there is no such cult. What's incredible is that there's absolutely no marketing hype behind the success of this book. Gibran himself is long gone. There is no political, religious, or commercial enterprise attached ... Read More

This book provides well-written insight into growing up as a black child during the Depression. Maya Angelou is wonderful with her use of words and imagery. I was greatly reminded of my own childhood and what being a kid really meant. Written in first person, she addresses childhood fears, respect for adults and growing up with such tangible details that she could be her eight-year-old self again.

Angelou's insights into the African-American way of life and religion during a time of national change range from tender to comical. She speaks warmly of her love for her brother and her frustration with the young white girls. It is sweet to see the growing up process taking affect and the experiences of youth shaping her character.

I am somewhat relieved that we were not permitted ... Read More

I waited for almost 3 weeks to receive this book. The seller rated the book as very good and charged me about 5.00 plus 3.99 for shipping. All together my bill was 9.41; however, 3 weeks later I received a wrinkled covered and bent paged book with a charge of 1.00. The seller didn't apologize for the delay nor for the tattered book, and I never did see the missing four dollars. This was the first time I have ever been disappointed with buying used books through Amazon.

I read this book maybe 4 years ago. There is no happy ending here, but neveretheless it should be picked up. I read this book in one day because I couldn't put it down.

This movie has everything: Undercover agents, military violence, insane anti-American antagonist, great comic situations, Jamie Lee Curtis doing a sexy dance, family rescue... best of all, Arnold. Who else can deliver true grit fighting and side-splitting humor the way Arnold can? This movie has them both in adequate amounts to keep you riveted. Who dances the Tango better, Jamie Lee or Tia Carrera? This movie is just great fun!!

Don't get me wrong. I attended 3 readings by Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky at Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusettes in the late 1970's and even recorded "Contest of the Bards" and handed him a copy of it at his request,... I 'absolutely' consider his oratory style of delivery and poetic verse and style amazing and brilliant and so very very entertaining and inspiring.. but the 'greatest' epic poem or poet of his century I just can't agree with. Gary Snyder made such an impact with introducing the marriage of Zen and the Orient into modern poetry style of his day (as Vincent vanGogh and Gauguin did in painting in the Expressionest era in painting/art), and Gary's poems of the passing of a day's events are so brilliant and open and revealing, and Jack Kerouac's style and impact, and Ferlinghetti's brilliance ... This year the job was done very well. The works were pulled from unique sources regardless of the place (a theological review & the New York Review of Books etc.) & the writers were focused upon. John Ashbery is in this year's work as well as the entire Dark Room Collective. I saw Kevin Young's poem appear in Poetry & knew this would be included. They did a good crunch time job of uniting all the sources & strongest writers of our generation to pull together the best work. Kudos to Lehman & Wright.

Just a note: This is my third year buying the collection & it's the best I've seen, Gluck, Trethewey, Young, everyone basically.

I thought 2006 was dominated by Kay Ryan's poem.
I thought 2007 was focused upon "sounds" as opposed to word choice.

10.Leaves of Grass by: Walt Whitman

4 1/2 stars, really, but we can't do that. This is the original 1855 version. Whitman added to the collection throughout his life, ending up with an overstuffed and very uneven "deathbed" version, which is better known. There are some good poems in it which aren't in the original, such as When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom'd, but there's a lot of pretty weak stuff, too. The 1855 has a small number of pretty consistently excellent poems which are highly original and loosely but definitely connected. Reading it is a very different experience from wading through the bloated, inconsistent final version - there's something Whitmanesque (i.e., at it's best) about the original collection as a unit. Malcolm Cowley's introduction is also a bit wild and wooly (written in the late 60s or early 70s), but interesting and enlightening.
