'Show, don't tell.'

This is a primary Writer's Credo. And this novel is a monument to disregarding it. In fact, it celebrates 'telling', as opposed to the more inclusive (and collaborative) 'showing'. As a burgeoning writer, I found it a fascinating experience, reading this book...in the same way that as a screenwriter, I learn more from bad films than from good ones.

Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed this book. It had its moments. (I'm currently reading a slew of 'chick-lit' novels as research; I have one on the go in this genre) Putting aside the facile nature of the exposition (it gets a little tedious declaring character by way of possessions, no matter how much supporting, corroborative narrative is provided), and the pedestrian plotline, 'Love the One You're With' ... I really thought this would be a great fast summer read but I was wrong. The book was a slow version of "Sex In The City" without the characters we all love. This was a disappointing follow up from the author of the Devil Wore Prada, which I loved.

I had read and loved The Kite Runner, so I was eager to read this second novel by Hosseini. I was expecting a good story. I was not expecting a story so gut-wrenching that I would find myself clutching a box of tissues and so overwhelming that I would frequently hold my breath without even realizing it until I finally let it out. The intertwining stories of the people in A Thousand Splendid Suns are special in that the characters live with so much despair and yet there is just a constant spark of hope - they keep hoping for better, and as a result, so does the reader.

Khaled Hosseini is an insanely gifted storyteller, the likes of which most authors could only hope to be. I can not applaud this book enough, it has become my favorite novel overall, knocking into second place a story ... Read More

Jhumpa Lahiri's new collection of stories detail the lives of several Bengalis learning to combine their heritage with American culture. Compromise and balance are imperative when approaching the variety of issues these characters encounter, including friendship, romantic relationships, morality, education and family values. Even seemingly minor parts of life, including dress and food, are examined, as they are very significant to the Indian identity. Generational differences are on the forefront of each story; many characters were either born in the United States or came to the country when they were young, making them identify more with the American culture they have been surrounded by. These struggles are visible in every story, but are tailored to fit the individual characters and their lives.

The pacing is excellent, I felt a connection to all the characters, and the story is well told. I liked this one better than 'Brother Odd' although they both rely on white-out conditions. In 'Brother Odd' it's snow; in 'Odd Hours' it's fog. Dean will be accused of cookie-cuttering (yeah, I butchered the term), and I can't remember a Koontz story without one of those golden retrievers in it. Please, please Dean - if you read this, please write something without dogs in it (even if it's a damn poem).

There is a little four part primer (not a spoiler) on YouTube. They're called webisodes, and they are entitled 'Odd Passenger'. They are well done, even if they are just commercials designed to get you to buy the book.

Odd is a great character. I want to run in to him at a diner someplace, ... Read More

I am sad to say I had not read this book till age 27. What was wrong with my high school? No Bell Jar, no 451?

*Anyway* fascinating read and crazy to think that books may be obsolete in the future, quite sad, since I'm an avid reader. The premise of the story is about a fireman who knows nothing else but his job and what life is like now, until he meets a young "strange" girl who discusses actual real life with him. After that, Montag starts to wonder things outside the realm of what he always knew and starts to question his job and the purpose of burning books. He ends up rebelling and fighting for the cause.

If you liked 1984, this book is similar is some aspects (to me at least). The sad bleak future that these authors dreamed up with the loss of individualism and the control of telescreens/televisions ... Read More

There were a few insightfull stories in this tome. But, this book is written by a real liberal. In his eyes there is no winning. There is only digging one hole to be filled by digging another. Tim O'Brien is a wimp, part of the wussification of America. There is no black or white just ambiguity. This explains why this book is used so much by colleges and universities (liberal educators). In effect this book says "I am so smart that I can't actually kill the man that wants and WILL kill me. I can look though the enemy's eyes and I am the enemy." What a lot of drivel. When America and the rest of the Western World is taken over by Islam his descendents and mine will bow reverently toward Mecca.

Aside from making a powerful statement about the so called "American Dream," this novel is brilliantly written. Mr. Fitzgerald's mastery of the English language is evident in his genius sentence structure and meticulous word choice. One cannot help but stop reading to simply marvel at some of his phrasing. I highly recommend Gatsby to anyone out for great read.

Tucker Max is no Shakespeare (that's why there are 4 stars up there). It should also be noted that this book is not to be taken seriously at any time. There are things that this man has done that are probably illegal in many states. That being said the book does seem to be able to be engrossing, and at times even having a hypnotic affect. The questions begin to rack up what will happen next? ect. Be warned though that you should not attempt to take the whole book in at once, you will be repulsed! really! But if taken over a period of time it can most definately be tolerable if not down right fun.

I first read this book in the 9th grade. Hated the character so much I only got half way through the book and just BSed my way through the class. However, since it was a "classic" I decided I should pick it up and finish it. It turns out the character is just as annoying now as it was when I was 14. So of the reviewers have sad this novel shows "universal" problems, that some how I didn't experience. The character is really probably clinically depressed and lacks social skills. The character also rants about phonies, but he comes across as the phoniest person in the book. The character is neither endearing nor insightful into the human condition. Pretty much this book amounts to the most annoying, depressed, dull and whinny person you can imagine ranting for 200 pages. I came to hate the character so much I only continued reading hoping the character ... Read More
