I have mixed views on this book.

On one hand, there is a wealth of global economic information that would be interesting to anyone following the topic. The book gives you a genuine glimpse into how individuals in the countries that count as 'the rest' view current trends. This book is not uninteresting by any means.

But it has the same inherent flaws as every other book by Zakaria. Like Friedman, he puts an over-emphasis on economics and tables completely geopolitical realities. When he does mention those who would disagree with that overemphasis, his dismissive nature of those critics is way too brief. He mentions that Iran is 'Romania, not Germany' when the threat that people are concerned about is nuclear and terrorism issues, not its economic growth. He dismisses ... Read More

The guy on the back cover - Martin H. Stein has lost his credentials to practice medicine repeatedly since the book came out - overall the "science" in this book is NOT proven. If you need help with your life / thinking, etc. - often getting MUCH MORE SLEEP, and cutting way down on the stress in your life - along with exercise and eating right is enough to solve the majority of peoples problems (along with increases earnings - ha!). This was told to me by a MD who testified against Dr. Stein. TRY THAT FIRST! ...

To recap - The featured "doctor" who wrote a blurb on the back cover isn't allowed to practice medicine anymore.

The best thing that I ever did was to purchase the APA Manuel.
It has helped me with formating and the proper way to cite in text and referance in APA format. This book is much better than the Diane Hacker book on APA.

Mr. Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma" is easily one of the best books I've read this year. He approaches the subject of the food we eat, where it comes from and who grows it in a thoughtful and thought provoking manner. He follows the food chain backwards from the fast food joint, the grocery store and restaurant to our food sources. This a cautionary tale about what the American consumer eats and the industrialization of the US food industry. The book is full of interesting characters that inhabit different elements of the food chain. Mr. Pollan's writing is excellent. He has a point of view but rather than beating you over the head with it, he invites you on a journey to discovery. Be prepared to change the way you look at food. AN OUTSTANDING BOOK!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Becoming acquainted with this book at this time in my life has become a true lifesaver for me. It has truly taught me to reflect on the way I think and how it has affected my health and general well-being. For the first time in many years, I've found that changing my way of thinking has brought me peace of mind, as well as release from a lot of the pain I have experienced. I now believe so much of my deteriorating health is attributed to the way I was thinking. Louise Hays has truly opened my eyes, and I am so very grateful.

Ever wonder if sumo wrestling is rigged? Or maybe pondered the likelihood that the slim wealthy single you met on a dating site is overweight and unemployed? In Freakonomics, Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner take on these questions and more in their fascinating and hilariously funny exploration of the most bizarre phenomena our world has to offer. Using solid research and piercing wit, Levitt and Dubner delve into the inner economic workings of those enterprises that are ignored by stock traders and analysts, and tackle the social issues that are too touchy, or just too weird, to be covered by more traditional writers.

Using the theories of economics, Levitt and Dubner challenge so-called "experts" or talking heads by asking intriguing questions. For instance, in the chapter titled, "Where Have All the Criminals Gone?" ... Read More

Dan Ariely has written a very engaging look into experiments he has conducted over his tenure at MIT. He starts with his medical history of his third degree burns over his body. Ariely does this to make the reader aware of his inspiration to "discover what people really like" in the world. His first example is removing the cloth from his wounds in a fast or slow motion. The nurses are sure the fast rip with a quick flash of pain is the best way; however, this makes Ariely begin to wonder the truth behind this common assumption.

The book flows in and out of his history and there did not seem to be in chronological order. The reader could skip around the chapters to their own delight. Ariely has made the book approachable for anyone with an affinity for experiments and the "why" behind the decisions. This approach has been ... Read More
