I've been trying to read this book for about six months, and I can never get more than 1/3 of the way through. It's frusterating because I have yet to read a negative review, so I assume it must just be because I am stupid that I don't like the book.

It's the end of the world and a father and son are traveling down a road. That's it? Yes, that's it. Maybe if the father's narrative used proper grammar and actually said things that made sense, it might have had more meaning, but as it is it is just meaningless garbage.

Every other page is a description of them building a fire and burning a tin can of food, and almost every paragraph ends like this: What is it, Papa? I don't know.

Eventually, I decided not to waste another minute of my life reading it ... Read More

Who'da thought that a writer of erotica would come up with a modern romance about everlasting love?

Did I say I absolutely loved the things I hated in so many of the author's previous novels? The small-town politics. The southern melodrama. The screaming hysterics. Well. I absolutely loved them all in Wild Card.

But most of all I loved that Sabella could commit forever to Nathan and mean it. And vice versa.

I'm not saying the book is perfect. By any means.

Hotness afficienados might say that the hotness takes a while to get going and that it's just slightly repetitive. It would have been nice if Bella had swallowed just once. Or that exactly the same phrases occur in different places in the novel. And really why on earth would the bcm want Sabella's ... Read More

We listened to the audio version while traveling cross country. The reader was talented but the story was so raw and brutal it was hard to take. I have never read this author before and probably won't again. If stark brutality is your thing you may like it but be warned it is not for the faint of heart. The only thing we really enjoyed was the outlandishly descriptive language which was sometimes so over the top we had to laugh. The author must write with a text book of over blown adjectives with the object of using as many as he can cram onto the page.

Superman, Batman, Spiderman, He-man... enough; I am through with these super men. After all, they are mere mortals... with some extraordinary powers. James Patterson, the prolific author...rather institution, has now, with "The Dangerous Days of Daniel X" started a new series. It is his own version of a super hero, and unlike our umpteen supermen, Daniel has a few extra powers up his sleeve, the most important being the power to create. So is Daniel the Almighty in a new avatar? Is he God himself? You have to read the book to find it out.

Anyway, without being a spoilsport let me say a few words about the book. As already said, this is the first of a planned series. The novel starts with the murder of the parents and sister ... Read More

Reading some of the already submitted reviews, it seems Crais fans and detracters alike expect a certain continous style of writing and storyline. I started reading Crais in the middle sequence of his books, went back to the start of the Elvis Cole novels, and have now read the latest. To be sure, Crais has grown in his writing style with more emphasis on enhancing prose than character personalization, which at times had become rather tedious. I was impressed with every aspect of this novel. Each time I thought I had it all figured out, a previously dismissed clue surfaced and propelled the book along. The old Elvis and Pike are now developing deeper personalities, a must for continuing characters in a series and I'm glad to see it. If I were to compare Elvis to a tv character, it would be Michael on Burn Notice - fun, ... Read More

Being a Third Waver sucks. It actually sucks even more than having no power at all because you got to have that moment when you *thought* your life would be that of a hero only to have that dream smashed upon the rocks when the academy turned you down.

Playing For Keeps is a fun, engaging read. We see into the lives of several "wimp" power Third Wavers who get caught up in the affairs of the "Real" heroes. First it's just a bit silly. Then things start to go very badly because that's what adventures are more realistically like: they're scary and occasionally brutal. Yet, although the story sometimes goes to a dark place it never gets bogged down there. I think this is because of the attitudes of the characters themselves. This is truly Mur's world.

One vaguely-spoiler-y warning though: ... Read More

I read a lot of political thrillers... good ones and not so good ones... this one I could not finish. The story was predictable, the characters caricatures of ultra-right wing rednecks and really, do I need to know that the characters ate before something happens in the story? Page 101: "once he gulped down his breakfast". Page 79 "he even allowed himself an after-dinner drink.". Page 115, "the resort's chef made a late lunch and the men made small talk as they ate". This weird interest in using meals as either filler or segways between scenes goes on and on. Did the publishers put a stipulation in his contract as to the number of pages he needed to fill? The politics of this author are predictable, ridiculously one dimensional and outright pandering to a certain segment of the population. There is nothing complex about this ... Read More

9.The Shack by: Young
2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Shack
Calling The Shack a truly unique piece of literary genius would be an understatement. It would be like calling The Sistine Chapel a simple work of art. But like both masterpieces, you need to delve deeper to truly appreciate what is in front of you. The story's premise is a simple one: the unconditional love God has for us all. It answers the questions we all grew up wondering and the answers just might change your entire outlook on life while changing your preconceived notions of theology. And yet, not everyone may agree with the ideas presented to them within the bindings of this work, they will all agree that this is the most thought provoking read to come out in years.

I'll try to be brief with the story so I don't spoil it for the few left who haven't read it. A man loses his daughter in a most horrific fashion ... Read More

This is the first Thor book I have read. This book was too hard to become involved and it dragged. I thought I would never get to the end. But, I read another one of his books, The First Commandment and now am a fan.
