I don't think that I have ever read such a unique book. The Road is an amazing book that keeps you turning the pages without being a thriller or a mystery. It is also fun to analyze. I had read only two pages when I realized that this is one of those books that you have to read with a pencil in your hand. There are so many sentences to underline, words to circle, and places to add your own thoughts into the margines.

Barbara Kingsolver does a great job at portraying her year living on a farm, raising her own poultry, growing her own produce, and buying locally without being too preachy or political. The commentary that was include by her husband and daughter was useful and complemented the book. I recommend this for anyone who is curious about why we should eat organic and local foods. It was a very insightful and enjoyable read.

3.Odd Hours by: Dean Koontz

The pacing is excellent, I felt a connection to all the characters, and the story is well told. I liked this one better than 'Brother Odd' although they both rely on white-out conditions. In 'Brother Odd' it's snow; in 'Odd Hours' it's fog. Dean will be accused of cookie-cuttering (yeah, I butchered the term), and I can't remember a Koontz story without one of those golden retrievers in it. Please, please Dean - if you read this, please write something without dogs in it (even if it's a damn poem).

There is a little four part primer (not a spoiler) on YouTube. They're called webisodes, and they are entitled 'Odd Passenger'. They are well done, even if they are just commercials designed to get you to buy the book.

Odd is a great character. I want to run in to him at a diner ... Read More

Not completly done reading, but over halfway. Too much time spent at strip-club, is really very boring. Am hoping for some excitment later. Not sure what all the hoop-la is about!

Aside from making a powerful statement about the so called "American Dream," this novel is brilliantly written. Mr. Fitzgerald's mastery of the English language is evident in his genius sentence structure and meticulous word choice. One cannot help but stop reading to simply marvel at some of his phrasing. I highly recommend Gatsby to anyone out for great read.

When I taught English 9 Honors, I would ask my students what they thought of the books we read. _Things Fall Apart_ always won the "worst book" award. They were right. This is one of the most overrated novels of the English language.

If Achebe had a B.S. detector, he might have been able to chisel this text down to an almost-bearable short story. Alas, he didn't, and this is what we have.

Okonkwo, the protagonist, is supposed to be tragic, but he's not. He's pathetic. He's utterly revolting, from beginning to end. The other characters aren't much better.

The plot starts nowhere and ends in the same place. Sure, there's an obvious structure to the novel, but it doesn't matter. Not much happens. The characters are lifeless, the plot is lifeless, and the prose ... Read More

I first read this book in the 9th grade. Hated the character so much I only got half way through the book and just BSed my way through the class. However, since it was a "classic" I decided I should pick it up and finish it. It turns out the character is just as annoying now as it was when I was 14. So of the reviewers have sad this novel shows "universal" problems, that some how I didn't experience. The character is really probably clinically depressed and lacks social skills. The character also rants about phonies, but he comes across as the phoniest person in the book. The character is neither endearing nor insightful into the human condition. Pretty much this book amounts to the most annoying, depressed, dull and whinny person you can imagine ranting for 200 pages. I came to hate the character so much I only continued ... Read More

Must have been the times in which it was first released because this book did nothing for me. I just don't get why people rave about this book. This is one of those rare cases where you should watch the movie and forget the book.

It would be easy to say that Laurell K. Hamilton is a bad writer, but that would be untrue. She is a good author and reading some of her earlier works in the Anita Black series you can easily see where she excelled and what propelled the series' popularity. Unfortunately, where these books now fail is in structure.

Telling vs. Showing: A basic tenant for good writing is the ability tell the story through the characters actions and reactions versus an author telling the reader what's happening. After many pages of three way sex, one participant says to another (and main character), Anita Blake: "You are so uncomfortable with sex Anita..." Huh? What?? This after not just any old ménage a' trois, but one tinged with light bondage. The statement just throws the reader off because that is not what the story has said so ... Read More

What an incredible first novel, a story of civilization, how humans create it and how easily it can be destroyed. It deals with fear, and the atrocities it can make people commit. Golding wrote often about the connection between humanity and civilization. Does civilization make us human? This story can mean many things to many people, making it wonderful fodder for literature classes and idle pondering.
