If you are GENUINELY ready to lose weight or get healthy, you will love this book. This book is hilarious, and is written in a satirical girl-talk language that is designed to work on the insecure (but powerful) psychology of women. Especially self-loathing women. I bought the book 2 days ago, and I've already lost 5 pounds! This is 99% water and poo (there's a whole chapter on poo), but it's a start. They explain nutrition in an easy-to-digest (no pun intended) way that is relevent to young women. Loved it!!

I recommend this book, in spite of its flaws, because it is a very useful history of CIA involvement in Afghanistan, from the end of the Carter administration until the day before the 9/11 attacks.

The book is divided into three parts, focusing on the Soviet occupation and mujahideen resistance, the Afghan Civil War, and the Taliban era, respectively. Coll commands a truly impressive list of source-interviews, and has clearly devoted considerable research time and effort. I suspect that few authors indeed could have had access to all of his information. If you can read the book through the end, it will be worth it.

But there are a few problems, which are significant:

1. The narrative tends to jump around in terms of geography and chronology. To some extent ... Read More

3.One Minute to Midnight: Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War by: Michael Dobbs

In his detailed research for what really happened in 1962, Michael Dobbs leaves few stones unturned and tries to tell the whole story. Unfortunately, this means that the story gets bogged down with too many details, some of the snippets don't contribute much to the overall narrative and much of the material is repetitive. What could have been a crisp drama stretches into a comprehensive documentary.

But, while this book lacks drama, it certainly delivers a clear-eyed assessment of the players and the events. The author's conclusions are sound. In times of crisis, ordinary people who are minor players often have a profound impact on events. Kennedy and Khrushchev were both sane, sage and sober (fortunately). And, personality is pivotal in politics - character counts.

Maus was a very engaging book. From the beginning I was pulled into the story. Maus is written in a very unique way. Art Spiegelman drew the Jews as mice, the Nazis as cats, and the Poles as pigs. Art Spiegelman told the story from the perspective of his father telling the story through an interview format. It is written in the form of a graphic novel. It is an interesting way to learn about history during the World War II era. Overall I liked this book, except I really didn't like the end. Also, there was a little bit of language.

The Long Walk is one of the greatest books I have ever read. The decades long battle over its authenticity is, I think, a testament to its power. Only a work of literature that brings such palpable reality to the reader could have withstood the firestorm of controversy surrounding it from so many corners.

Concerning its authenticity, I think there should be some humility shown on all sides. There are those who would desire to believe it simply because it is a great tale. Others would seek to "burst the bubble" of all involved out of a cynical doubt in the human capacity for greatness.

Several considerations should be made when considering the recently revealed documents disproving Rawicz's claims: 1. Rawicz' story is too detailed to have been entirely fabricated. Whether or not he himself ... Read More

I was disappointed by this book. The subject is very interesting. I never knew about US citizens who had disappeared into the Gulag, so I picked up this book with enthusiasm. The early chapters are very good describing those Americans who went to the USSR with high hopes and beliefs. But then we lose sight of them, and the book becomes a rather moralizing history of the US diplomats and politicians who ignored their fate with long discourses on the evils of the Stalinist regime, which we know very well from better books, by Figes, Applebaum, etc.

This is without a doubt the best non-fiction book I have ever read. The plot, the characters and the writing were all brilliant. A truly exhilirating thrill ride. I couldn't put the book down - in fact, I missed my bus stop reading the book.

When I finished, I felt that I had lost my close friends, and that my life had just gotten a little less exciting.

If you want a thrilling, titilating, over-the top book that never lets up in terms of entertainment, than this is the book for you.

If there were six, seven or even eight stars, I would award those to this book too.

In a word - Awesome!

9.War and Peace from: Nick Hern Books

Books : War and Peace
The nineteenth century was the era of the great novel. The twentieth may have seen far more, but 20th-Century novels are basically dispo-lit: throw-aways not expected to endure: published in paperback, and rightly. "Atlas Shrugged" (1951) was the last "great" novel.

The worst shortcoming of 19th-Century novelists was their tendency to get the train of story stalled on irrelevant sidetracks while they explored history and geography: Dickens & Dumas wandered afield, but divertingly, & Hugo strayed so far that many readers never got back. (You have to read the first quarter of "Notre Dame de Paris" before the plot begins.)

In W&P, Tolstoy carried it to the ultimate: the history is so intimately connected with the story of five aristocratic Russian families of the early 1800s that you cannot separate ... Read More

I had to read this book over the summer for my world history AP class. Usually any summer book I have to read for school I usually dislike. So when I got this book, I was kinda unsure about whether I would enjoy it, considering it was going to be about history. However, to my surprise it wasn't bad at all and it was interesting and way better than reading history out of a text book. The only downfall is that after I read it, I had to write an essay about for it for school.
