This book is disturbing and for that reason should be on the short list of required texts for college. Unlike the WWI and WWII war books which read like ancient history this one hits close to home as most of the events transpired within the last decade. The author does a great job of telling his story from a boys point of view with imagery that will give you nightmares.

If you cannot handle reading about graphic violence, rape, murder, wartime atrocities, then do not buy this book. Otherwise it is a good companion to the Blood Diamond movie which covers some of the same material.

This book is a must for anyone interested in West Africa and how illegal diamond trading has shaped its history. Due to geologic conditions, Illegal diamonds (or Blood Diamonds as they are known in the vernacular) are the primary economy of this area. Diamond mining, the search for diamond sources, the selling of the stones, the conspiracy of 'legitimate' businesses to pretend that they do not know what is going on in the West African diamond business, and the resulting wars and atrocities created by this stone is the subject of this book. Blood Diamonds have resulted in gross atrocities to the people in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Thousands of people are missing arms, feet, eyes or have been killed because of the diamond trade. Industry giants such as De Beers look the other way as military, ... Read More

I've never had any interest in writing a review before, but I felt compelled after reading Mr. Gberie's book. It is thorough and detailed but not overly 'academic'. I think part of what makes it stand out so much is the authors background and personal involvement in the story. He shows how the world was fooled by their pre-conceived notions about 'typical African conflicts' and by the statements of the rebels themselves. By examining the actual facts on the ground and the actions of the rebels he proves that their only motivation for existence was monetary gain. This had a profound effect on the multiple peace negotiations, which many times only made the confict worse. He traces back all of the atrocities that we associate with the RUF war and shows how human beings like you and I were coerced into ... Read More

If you are going to judge the actions of the people in this book with your own personal biases, I recommend you put the book down. Coming from the USA, immediate the thought of Genital Mutilation puts me in disgust, but I put it into perspective with the beautiful culture of the Mende. As in Western/developed societies where people do what is the norm, it is the same the world over, even though norms are different. From what I've learned, the general opinion used to be that African cultures had no aesthetics, because they do not completely mimic popular US trends, etc. The author made this book in an attempt to prove to the Western influenced societies that African cultures do have standards of beauty and acceptance.

This is my fourth book about the terrors of the RUF. These were ugly people trying to overthrow the legitimate government of Sierra Leone. The RUF killed white people, anybody that disagreed with them, and kidnapped young people to place in their army. They were supported by the likes of Charles Taylor of Liberia and Colonel Quaddafi of Libya. No wonder these were killers who didn;t care a dang about the people they were supposedly liberating. The RUF also engaged in a terrorist act of chopping people's hands/legs/nose/ears off, to show they meant business.

The author Voeten spent a terrible two to three weeks of hiding from these killers in 1998. A kind educated rural family protected him rather than turn him over to the RUF. The author recounts his stories of those that lost their lives ... Read More

Books : In the Land of Magic Soldiers: A Story of White and Black in West Africa
This book read well. I like the individual stories interspersed with the history of this troubled country. The stories of the Rhodesian mercenary, white American missionaries, Sierra Leonean amputee, and the medical student certainly were interesting. Whether I want to believe in a guerrilla soldier getting shot in the stomach or a person eating razor blades may be a stretch of the imagination.

The author recreates the terror and hatred of the Civil War. As he reminds us, much of sub Sahara Africa is in a downhill spiral, and the results in human terms is civil war, terror, tribalism, kleptocracy, and an early death to millions of Africans. Medically, there is little treatment for Africans of the many diseases rampant on the continent.

I liked this easy to read book. One reviewer raised the ... Read More

Books : The Devil that Danced on the Water: A Daughter's Quest
Since I learnt of this book from literary reviews I had hastened to find time to zero-in on it. I have not been disappointed. Aminatta writes with such penetrating brilliance that only a born-gifted can produce. The pathos of her father's demise hung heavily on her and with time this must have unleashed a superb creativity embracing analysis and synthesis. She took the lid off the 'golden bowl' of her parents' matrimonial woes, just as she took a swipe at the creoles and mendes for their various shortcomings, leaving the temnes unscathed. Some gross inaccuracies found their way into an otherwise well researched piece, such as there being several hospitals in Freetown at a certain time that catered only to Colonial Masters and their Creole civil servants. Wrong. Hill Station Hospital was for the Colonial Masters. Others contented themselves ... Read More

The first three "official" reviews of this book fail to convey the sheer original, revealing, even emotional nature of this book. Many Americans now accept that their patriotic Revolutionary ancestors--including the Founding Fathers--owned slaves. Some Americans are aware that many of these slaves fled to the British controlled areas and cities under the promise of gaining freedom. A few Americans may then know of what happened to these former slaves--how many were take off to Nova Scotia with thousands of white Loyalists. What Cassandra Pybus reveals in this book opens all this up into dimensions undreamed of by all but perhaps a literal handful of historians. And in fact, what she presents is more like a nightmare than a dream. In an impeccably researched and footnoted narrative, she first investigates those three relatively "knowns" that I referred ... Paul Richards writes this book from a controversial -- and certainly not typical -- perspective. While refreshing in this innovation, the argument is poorly structured, and Richards' writing nearly impossible to follow. I found reading this work unbelievably frustrating, and the convoluted presentation of both fact and theory inappropriate to a work of social science. Where were the editors?!?
