The book really excels in the first third, the detail about Liverpool and John's early life were fascinating and well presented. I also enjoyed how Norman kept an eye on John and Paul as working musicians - details about how they peppered their early songs with "you" or "me" in the titles as they thought that assured their hit status - gave the more well trodded material some new angles for me.

My interest faltered around the time John meets Yoko. Perhaps artists are less interesting when they become happier or perhaps Norman is a tad too fawning towards Yoko, whatever the cause I found the latter sections of the book to be frankly dull. I suspect part of this comes from Norman wanting to paint a positive picture of Yoko while not seeming to be her "offical biographer" which leaves ... Read More

I have always been a fan of Robert Wagner. The way the book was written is how I expected it to be. The book flowed along really well. I enjoyed getting to know alot of famous celebrities (most of them are now deceased) through RJ's memories. There was a good combination of elements in the book from knowing the people he dated and who other people dated, etc.

I've just gotten started reading this, on recommendation from a friend. I am 56 and grew up listening to most of the early rock albums he reviews. I skip over the classical, and there's a lot of genres covered that I don't normally listen to, but I will search out these gems and give a listen. The book is a collection of album reviews, mostly 33 rpm LPs, which is an almost extinct format that music was delivered in, when most of these recordings were made. Each album gets a half-to-full page review, and so far, I've found the reviews to be dead on with my perception of the music. I am a musician, so I am particularly critical if anything written is out of line. If you are not familiar with all major rock and pop artists and influences from the 60's onward, then it will give you a great roadmap to seek out great music, ... Read More

I was a Brady Bunch fan back in the day and of course wished I could look and be like Marcia Brady. Didn't every young girl? At any rate, I thought this book was excellent. Despite the horror her life became, I thought it was courageous for her to write this for the world to know. In a way it's like pricking a ballon and letting the air out. Some may be disappointed to discover the truth, others may be relieved that she was just an ordinary woman with serious problems. This was also a survival story. I give Ms. McCormick a lot of credit for pulling through. At any rate, this book kept me turning the pages. I loved discovering the behind-the-scene facts. It makes me now want to watch the shows all over the again, just because now I know what was going on. I definitely found the book interesting and for anyone who'd like to ... Read More

What a great book. I'm trying to somehow delay finishing it, because I'm enjoying it so much. It has seriously affected my outlook on creativity, self-expression, artistry, chiseling your craft and all those wonderful things. Steve writes incredibly well. What a talent he is. Truly an inspiration in so many ways. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. It deserves all the praise it gets.

Its' a beautiful book, with almost all of his lyrics, well designed, nice cover, etc. I was a little disappointed though, because of the lack of 'bonus' material. No pictures (except for the album covers and a few drafts), no commentaries, no anecdotes, nothing. Just a couple of cliché laudatory introductions by whoever-they-are...

The paper, besides, isn't as fancy as the cover may suggest. It's ok for the texts, but definitely not-ok for the few pictures...

I'm learning a lot about 20th-century music from The Rest is Noise, but it's a tough read. The book is clearly well researched, however, in an effort to cite sources, the author disrupts the narrative flow. Consider the following sentence:

"Strauss sketched a choral work based on Goethe's text, and, as Jackson discovered, some of that material went into Metamorphosen."

"Jackson" here is Timothy Jackson, a researcher mentioned in an earlier paragraph. Inline citations like this are peppered throughout the book, making it very difficult to focus on the story at hand. I think it would have been better if these citations were in the form of endnotes.

The book takes a detached, scholarly tone throughout. Nonetheless, it is a very informative and thorough review of 20th century classical music, and I ... Read More

This book is okay. Although I thought it made Ms. Spelling appear to be a self-absorbed narcissist who is completely out of touch with the real world. She spends an inordinate amount of time talking up her "accomplishments" and trying to dispel the perception that her success is directly attributable to her family ties. Additionally, the constant complaints she lodges about her life and her overwhelming desire to be "normal" has the unintended effect of justifying the fact that she really is a "poor little rich girl." Overall, the book is irritating, shallow and confirms exactly what it tries so hard to dispel.
