Definitely Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 6)
Charlaine Harris really knows how to write a book, if you like your vampire series with a bit of humor you will like these books, if you like your mysteries with a bit of what we call "Woo Woo" (in other words weird stuff)
then you'll like Ms.Harris's Southern Vampire series and if you find you like it find the rest Sookie Stackhouse is a kick and coming in September 2008 on HBO, the series based on this books called "True Blood".

Now that I've read the whole series, this one is my favorite in the series. You get to see Sookie's personality develop, as well as alot of other characters including Quinn. The tempo of the book is different then the other books because most of it isn't set in Bon Temps. Most of it takes place at a vampire confrance, with lost of vampire politics, and "supes" interaction. It never stops! You're either learning about the supernatural community, or Sookie's life is in danger, either way, I was engrossed.
If you like this series, this book won't disappoint. If you haven't read the first 6 books Ms Harris does a really good job or "recapping" what you need to know about the first books without making it boring for those that have.

We are being bombarded by politics and items in real life that are bordering on the absurd that it often seems that reality is distorted for the "people that are in charge" and leads to rather strange results and log jams.

The President and Congress are more often in the spot light and the Supreme Court is sort of the third wheel to some degree which often does not get the same press. Attention is focused usually when a major decision is released (how many decisions in the last few years are known?) and when Supreme Court nominations come up. The process for approval starts and the sometimes rather absurd political maneuvers -just think of the process as when Bork or Miers came up.

And this process is the springboard for the author's satire as appointments for the Supreme ... Read More

WWZ is the first piece of zombie anything that actually scared me! It's not just the horrifying way the Zeds are described, but the collapse of society that sends a realistically chilling shudder through you. A must have for any fan of horror!

2008 is the ideal time to apply the principles that we have learned from Animal Farm and apply them to November's 2008 Presidential election. Just as Napolean, the pig, instigated a rebellion against the owner of the farm (Jones) by talking about how great things will be once the animals ruled the farm, today we are told by the Obama Democrats that once Bush and the Republicans are thrown off the farm (Washington), that all will be well, that things will look wonderful, and that none of us will ever be hungry again. In Animal Farm, though, the animals were far worse off after Mr. Jones was kicked off the farm. Like Obama, Napolean also did not have any experience in running a farm, but this did not stop him from stating that he would be more competent and able to handle the farm. Further, once Napolean ... Ever since our ancestors started looking into the night sky, the saw patterns and connections between the stars, moons and planets, and used stories and myths to imbue those patterns with meaning and structure. With the big hindsight of the scientific worldview, all those ancient stories may seem quaint and naïve. And indeed, the advent of modern astronomy and astrophysics has greatly enriched and deepened our understanding of the Cosmos. But these wonderful new insights should not be taken in opposition to our imagination when we stare in the sky. And this is the starting point of Italo Calvino's wonderful book "Cosmicomics." It is in a sense a variation on the theme of Cosmos. Each one of the chapters in the book takes a certain scientific fact about the Cosmos, its evolution and the present state, and turns it into ... 8.The Broom of the System by: David Foster Wallace

David's early book titles apparently have little to do with the subject matter, much like a song from REM, whose lyrics have nothing to do with anything at all, other than they sound good. Don't expect to learn what is 'The Broom of the System' by reading this book.

What you should expect is a Douglas-Adams like treatment of the near future, full of quintessential midwestern humor (David is from Urbana, Illinois), which consists mainly of Satire, Irony, and Social Comment. These are his major strengths. They are brilliantly displayed every so often in a 3-20 page satirical rant or manic expository piece.

If you want an example of his brilliance, search inside this book for 'vanity' and read what it says. This book-within-a-book - only 3 pages long, and starting on page 20 - will "up" your reading ... Read More

Like all Lewis' works, this book is full of insights into human life - into those aspects which are often too big and obvious for us to notice. These insights are given us directly from the enemy through the writings of a devil named Screwtape. He writes to his nephew (a novice tempter devil) about his nephew's "patient," a human struggling with faith, who is a representation of us. This book bettered my attitudes about people and life and faith by orders of magnitude! I recommend it to everyone!!

Enjoyable chic-lit, in the vein of Bridge Jones Diary. Plucky British working woman, trying to find love and happiness, confused about who the right man is.

The book does raise the issue of what kind of person you are, whether you are defined by your memories, your actions, your past, your intentions. But it doen't hit you over the head with it.
