I am a casual DC Comics fan who was much more into comics in my youth. I bought this encyclopedia because I used to enjoy reading "Who's Who," a series in the 80's that featured biographies of DC characters. The cover art on this is striking, done beautifully by Alex Ross. The biographies have all been updated, so it was nice to hear about what my favorite (or obscure) heroes and villians have been up to the last 10-20 years. The entries are generally well-written, though I have found an error here and there. Occasionally, an entry will say deceased, but not mention how or if the character died or not say deceased, but indicate in the entry that the character died. Also, this was produced before the "Infinite Crisis" series, which changed (and in some cases killed) many of the characters in ... Read More

I got this book for my birthday and I'm really, really glad that I got it. Want to get that out of the way first. As a basic reference source it's excellent as a geeky coffee table book it's pretty much without peer. It's on my desk at work and at least once a day I get into a vigorous debate or pleasant conversation about Marvel and Marveldom. On a personal level, as the only guy in my neighbourhood who collect all of OHOTMUDE (seriously, the comic guy got one copy of each issue and kept it behind the counter for me), it's just a fun read.

Unfortunately, while it could have been much more than that, it's really just a fun read.

There are numerous typographical errors, about one every two pages or so. Either the origin issue is wrong, a word is badly misspelled or, ... Read More

This is a great tutorial and reference for anyone considering writing a comic book for the first time (or perhaps someone more experienced who'd like to get a fresh perspective and/or deeper understanding of fundamental structure). Scott has taken all those elements that go into making a good comic book (that you've probably noticed subconsciously but couldn't put into words) and laid them bare with expert analysis.

The analyses and guidelines are presented in a light-hearted, comic book format that is both entertaining and enlightening. You won't find yourself getting sleepy or distracted while reading this book - and you will understand every concept with perfect clarity, even if you are a complete novice.

The history of scapegoating in the 20th-century United States is a long one, with public fears about menaces real or imagined directed at alleged causes ranging from drugs to TV to rock and rap music, accompanied by reams of pontificating and propaganda that tend to seem pretty silly in hindsight (Reefer Madness, anyone?). In The Ten-Cent Plague, David Hajdu tells the story of one particularly dumbfounding example of mass hysteria that gripped the country in the late 1940's and early 1950's in the form of the campaign against comic books. Starting with the rise of the medium in the early 20th century as a mode of expression for minorities, tenement dwellers, and other outsiders, the book moves into an extensive retelling of the way the forces of reaction mobilized to turn comics into symbols of ... At gunpoint you couldn't force me to read the 9/11 Report. What Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colon have graphically done is truly innovative.
Not only does this graphic depiction tell the story, it is historically factual. It sets out all the findings, history, conjectures, failures and recommendations of the Commission.
We find out in exact detail the timing, training and execution of the terrorists in accomplishing their terrorist acts.
We look inside the four flights and simultaneously see what each one was doing all at the same time. Using the magic of graphics we follow all these flights at once.
Jacobson and Colon tell of the attacks in graphic clarity. They also show the history as outlined in the 9/11 Report leading to the United States not organizing properly to avoid ... Read More

There is a lot of great stuff in here, but there is so much missing! We only get 3 full page pics of the 7 Buck Rogers covers, besides the slipcase cover, which is obscured by a logo and cropped, and a tiny thumb of another one. We get 5 of the 6 Ghost Rider covers, but all are thumbnail size, 3" by 2". That's just too small to appreciate all the detail. And there are many classic stories missing. Like "Last Chance!" from Witzend and the story from Creepy #1 (of which we only get 1 pg). We also only get 1 page of his work on "Little Annie Fanny" for playboy, and I'm sure there are many more stories missing.

On the plus side though, there is much in here that is amazing which I've never seen before. We get many complete issues of his best stories, like his Romance tales and the full 1st issue of Thun'da. The art is ... Read More

I can't claim I was ever a big fan of Steve Ditko, I grew up reading comic books, and of course, I read reprints of his work on Spiderman, but I liked the more realistic work of John Romita (and perhaps, the unrealistically beatiful women he drew). Now I can look at it and see how revolutionary it was in the early 60s, and it was a really unique way to draw a superhero book, I'm sure that was no small part of why Spiderman caught the popular imagination of the day.

My main exposure to Ditko's art was his work on Rom: Spaceknight, and I hated it, my views have softened some since then, but I still don't care for it. But after reading this book, I have an understanding of why his later work wasn't as good as his earlier work, all the characters were so stiff, and almost unfinished, they all kind of blended together into ... The Marvel Vault is billed as a "museum in-a-box", and that's pretty much what it is. It's illustrated not only with covers and interior art from pricey comics and photos of their creators, but also with reproductions of ephemera such as character and cover sketches and unedited artwork. Also, several clear vinyl sleeves hold reproductions of Marvel ephemera such as the Marvel Value Stamps and the program book from the 1973 Marvel Comic Art Convention.

There are better choices if you're looking for a history of Marvel Comics (Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics by Les Daniels is probably the best known, but also worth reading are Tales to Astonish: Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and the American Comic Book Revolution by Ronin Ro and Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book by Gerard Jones, though the ...
