I am a casual DC Comics fan who was much more into comics in my youth. I bought this encyclopedia because I used to enjoy reading "Who's Who," a series in the 80's that featured biographies of DC characters. The cover art on this is striking, done beautifully by Alex Ross. The biographies have all been updated, so it was nice to hear about what my favorite (or obscure) heroes and villians have been up to the last 10-20 years. The entries are generally well-written, though I have found an error here and there. Occasionally, an entry will say deceased, but not mention how or if the character died or not say deceased, but indicate in the entry that the character died. I got this book for my birthday and I'm really, really glad that I got it. Want to get that out of the way first. As a basic reference source it's excellent as a geeky coffee table book it's pretty much without peer. It's on my desk at work and at least once a day I get into a vigorous debate or pleasant conversation about Marvel and Marveldom. On a personal level, as the only guy in my neighbourhood who collect all of OHOTMUDE (seriously, the comic guy got one copy of each issue and kept it behind the counter for me), it's just a fun read. There is a lot of great stuff in here, but there is so much missing! We only get 3 full page pics of the 7 Buck Rogers covers, besides the slipcase cover, which is obscured by a logo and cropped, and a tiny thumb of another one. We get 5 of the 6 Ghost Rider covers, but all are thumbnail size, 3" by 2". That's just too small to appreciate all the detail. And there are many classic stories missing. Like "Last Chance!" from Witzend and the story from Creepy #1 (of which we only get 1 pg). We also only get 1 page of his work on "Little Annie Fanny" for playboy, and I'm sure there are many more stories missing. On the plus side though, there is much in here that is amazing which I've never seen before. We get many complete issues of his best stories, like his Romance tales and the full 1st issue of Thun'da. I can't claim I was ever a big fan of Steve Ditko, I grew up reading comic books, and of course, I read reprints of his work on Spiderman, but I liked the more realistic work of John Romita (and perhaps, the unrealistically beatiful women he drew). Now I can look at it and see how revolutionary it was in the early 60s, and it was a really unique way to draw a superhero book, I'm sure that was no small part of why Spiderman caught the popular imagination of the day. My main exposure to Ditko's art was his work on Rom: Spaceknight, and I hated it, my views have softened some since then, but I still don't care for it. But after reading this book, I have an understanding of why his later work wasn't as good as his earlier work, all the characters were so stiff, and almost unfinished, they all kind of blended together into ...
