I'd read an article about Alan Ball (the creator of "Six Feet Under") who's creating a series for HBO based on these novels. The concept of the vampires being mainstreamed into society and a protagonist who struggles with a telepathic disability (she can read minds but wishes she couldn't) was very intriguing, so I downloaded the book to my Kindle. The writing is certainly not literature, but it grabs you and pulls you along and makes for a very fast and amusing read. I'm giving it only three stars because it turns into a romance novel and it's a bit trashy. There are quite a few sex scenes and they are prolonged and quite descriptive. This first novel in the series as well as the next was spellbinding. I so enjoyed the characters and the plot that I read them back to back. I can't wait for the next book.

I don't know why people compare Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series to Kim Harrison's books. Briggs is at least 10x better in plot development, character development and writing styles. Brigg's characters are more complex yet believable. The twists in plots are pleasant surprises.

After delving back into comics and graphic novels from a 15 year hiatus, I embarked on a quest to find books that would suit a mature reader in his 20s and lo and behold this is such a book! I had read the overwhelmingly positive reviews left for "Preludes and Nocturnes" and decide to give it a go, and boy am I glad I did! I have to say when I opened the book initially I was a bit put off by the art style but after going through the first two issues in the book I began to appreciate the beauty of the style because it suits the story so well. As far as the story it is quite compelling for the most part but a couple aren't so exciting. Be warned: Magic Burns is a dark story with graphic monsters and battle scenes mixed in with the humor and shapeshifters. In this second book, the banter is even better and the characters and the setting given additional details. Again, this isn't erotica or a romance, but a urban fantasy book with a few wonderful alpha-male characters to drool over while you cheer for Kate. Highly recommended!

This series is so strong and chock-a-block with interesting characters, backstories, settings, etc., that it makes me want to write the author and beg her to write faster. I noticed that she stepped away from this series to create another book, but I'm anticipating that means the next book in THIS series will only be better. We have the expected paranormal background--the outsiders inching towards a place in society--but the spin on this series is the level of detail in Western European myths (world of the fae, etc.)and the touch of Native American stories of "walkers"--individuals able to assume the identity of native animals. Bones is pretty much a bounty hunter/hitman and he tries to track down a ruthless vampire who kidnaps and sells human girls. Cat and Bones have an awesome chemestry going on and of course they hook up. The book reminded me a lot of Buffy, not because she is a vampire slayer but because the book has an awesome sense of humor without being silly. I really enjoyed this installment. The last book was so boring and predictable, I'm happy to report that this one was not. First there was alot of story about John--I love him so much. His story all around breaks my heart. Second...there was no lesser story! I really needed a break from all their nonsense for a bit. Third I liked V more than I thought, I like his history and his transformation. This book actually made me sad at one point. Crazy I know. I also liked Jane more than any of the other women so far.
