I am a nurse and also a student currently working on my masters. During the course of my degree I have of course had to learn anatomy (body structures) and physiology (body functions). The one thing that I have always had issue with was the way even my very expensive books for school seemed to lack in any really good illustrations. I am a visual learner and I really appreciate the clarity of a good illustration.

What David Macaulay has done here with this book "The way WE work" is to look at the body from the viewpoint of an engineer and illustrator. Mr Macaulay is the mastermind of the very popular The way things work. He has brought those skills to the human body. I appreciate the very clear and thoughtful way he portrays different body components and how they all work together ... Read More

This book is exactly what we needed! My 8-year-old daughter and I just finished reading it together and it was a perfect way to introduce her to puberty and all it entails. It is written for young girls in a way that doesn't talk down to them but is also completely appropriate for girls 8 and up. I appreciated the discussions about the emotions and difficulties girls face during puberty, beyond just the "facts." My thanks to the authors! I will be recommending this to all of my mom friends who have girls.

I bought this book when my daughter faced some serious lags in starting the school year--3 days into a new school and 6th grade, and she was out from an appendectomy. I knew we'd have to do some serious instruction at home to keep her up to speed. Because our math text book is so unfriendly, the teacher recommended another reference, but this popped up on the Amazon suggestions. The positive reviews grabbed my interest, and when the book came I found that I actually wanted to read it! It has come in very handy during teary episodes of "I don't know how to do this"--it covers all those topics we once learned, but forgot, and makes it very fast and easy to re-learn (for parents) and learn (for kids). It's fun, engaging, and very helpful. Thanks, Danika!

While "Brave New World" may lack the narrative punch of other dystopias such as "1984", I cannot help but feel that for sheer prophetic rightness, Huxley hits the nail on the head where others fail. Where Orwell sees an oppressive government that frightens and tortures its populace into submission, Huxley envisions a world where government control is total and yet unnoticed, simply because the population does not care.

Why care about your government when there is so much more fun stuff to be doing? There's soma - a happy-pill that counters all sadness, doubt, and anxiety - to take, romances to conduct, entertainment to consume, and so many other more interesting things to think about. And don't we see that today, in the news media (I second the reviewer who ... Read More

This version is closer to the CD of Raffi songs that my kids listen to.
The pictures are excellent -it's easy to make up new stories to go along with the original text.
