I won't lie.. I'm a bit surprised by all the praise this book has received. Mr. Ruiz Zafón is indeed a talented writer, but comparing him to García Márquez and Borges is a little too much in my humble opinion. (I mean.. really??!! Is he really up there with a Nobel-prize winner??!!) Not to trash unecessarily this book. Don't get me wrong: it is good. Not excellent, not a classic but good nonetheless. It is engaging, fresh and well written. It flows and, considering that this book is over 500 pages, it is quite an achievement. It never gets tedious. Soy una adulta mayor y adoro las historias que me hagan soñar. Mi hija me regalo el primer volumen en ingles y es fantastica; pero la traduccion al español es muy pobre. Al parecer la persona encargada de ella, no encontro realmente el alma de la novela, duele ver que aquellos lectores de lengua hispana que no puedan leer en ingles,pierdan un 50% de lo esperado.

I thought this was a very good book, considering I had to read it for school. At first I thought I would not enjoy it because it was very wordy and there were a LOT of characters that seemed to have no real importance, but as I continued reading, I realized that it was a very well thought out and well written novel. I wish that I were fluent in spanish so that I could read the original version, but the english translation will have to suffice. I highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in Latin American politics and communisim, but also to anyone who is looking for a challenging and intriguing read.

This is a wonderful novel for Spanish I students in High School. I could even use it with 7th and 8th graders, I believe. We sue it during the summer to keep their Spanish abilities active, and also to build confidence and comprehension. This book does many things for a student: 1) builds vocabulary 2) improves comprehension level 3) motivates students to find out "what happens" 4) provides a new way to increase Spanish knowledge. As a teacher of ages 3 to 18 year olds, I use excerpts from these books here and there, and use them for a Summer Spanish reading program each summer. Great idea and execution! Sra. I bought this book for my goddaughter who is a senior in high school and taking Spanish 4. But I have a copy myself and it is the best story I have ever read. The story has influenced my life, which is unusual for a novel. It is heart-warming, romantic, and inspiring for a decent gourmet chef like me. You'll love this story.
