As a cat owner and sucker for sentimental stories about pets, I wanted to like this book -- but "Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World" just never lands on its feet. This self-proclaimed "heartland story" about a stray cat who finds a home in an Iowa library and ends up "changing lives ... one lap at a time" is by turns charming and grating. Part of the problem is that writer and primary Dewey caretaker Vicki Myron, with an assist from co-writer Bret Witter, doesn't bother laying down the narrative carpentry. As a result, the book rushes through scenes without setting them up and working them through to a satisfying emotional payoff. (For an example of how to do this right, read the "All Creatures Great and Small" series.) Another problem is that much of the story isn't about ... Read More

The book is excellent, and a good read that's hard to put down. Elizabeth Gilbert did and excellent job in sharing her journey to get closer with God, in this book. This is a very nice book, which adjective may be the kiss of death itself. Wagner is obviously still grieving Natalie Wood, and is still in love with her, therefore he treads softly amid her memories.

The worship of her memory negates the book from being a factual account of a marriage. While the book is about the rest of Wagner's life as well, and very interesting, it is so bland and worshipful in the parts about Natalie as to be boring.

Wagner mentions a "ridiculous book" written by Lana Wood soon after Natalie's death. I read that book as soon as it was published, and while I found it not flattering to Mr. Wagner, whom I admire, I did appreciate that Natalie was portrayed, warts and all, as we all are....

Nice photos, good interviews, an OK book but a quick ... Read More

This is a wonderful book. The stories are funny and fascinating, and quite educational without being dry or dull. There are some vivid descriptions of things that only biologists could experience that might gross out the unwary. (Human parasites, anyone?) Neverless I reccomend the book highly, except....

I like mice. Mice like me. The descriptions of how the poor biologist personally worked out the best way of pre-killing the mice that Wesley ate are Icky and graphic if mercifully brief. Not for the squeamish, children, disturbed individuals or people who have pet rodents. If you have young children who can read you should seriously consider removing that page or two. I have no problems with the photo of Wesley about to swallow a nice plump dead mouse, it's not an Icky picture and predators ... Read More

Out of all the autobiographies I've read of prominent men and women, and particularly those wih political ambition and desire for high office, I don't think I've ever read anything as frank and straightforward as this book of Obama's. Writing about oneself is difficult for most people most of the time, and here, describing one's childhood (or bi-racial childhood as Americans often say) involves displaying whatever conclusions you've reached as you assenbked your emotional and intellectual self, in different parts of this country, and in Indonesia, and that must surely have been profoundly difficult.

Considering the high level of education Obama's achieved, that the book is written well should be no surprise. But what is so amazing about all this is that currently the election campaign of Obama's Republican ... Read More

The sheer ignorance of science and medicine that is CELEBRATED in this book is extremely frightening and dangerous for the health of America. To all of you who refuse to vaccinate your children -- your arrogance and ignorance is putting all of our children at risk! Just witness the recent rise in measles and mumps.

Folks, we are living in the middle ages. "Mommy knowledge" does not trump science and medicine. Jenny has done a tremendous disservice to the country, and too her child, by supporting the quacks who mouth the anti-vaccination line.

Please, do not support her ignorance by buying this book.

As some of the reviewers write, I, too, believe that the premise of this book is a good one - eat local - however, there has to be a better way to present this book than through a preachy tone. I kept reading, but also kept putting the book down, which is unusual for me.

Our family tested our gardening skills this year and have grander plans for next year, albeit nothing like Ms. Kingsolver's foray. I kept reading this book because Ms. Kingsolver would throw in some really good information on certain topics (it would have been nice if she had created a plant chart as an appendix). The recipes were interesting to look at, but I'll probably only try one or two of them because it looks like I like a much spicier dish than Ms. Kingsolver's family (or maybe the spices were allowed because they weren't locally grown?). Apparently ... Read More
