1.The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death by: Jean-Dominique Bauby

Books : The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death
Jean-Dominique Bauby's "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" is a truly moving and inspirational memoir by a man rendered incapable of any communication except for the blinking of his left eye and very slight head movement. Bauby had suffered from a stroke, which led to what is so aptly known as `locked-in-syndrome'.

Bauby, a distinguished journalist who had been editor-in-chief at Elle, famously used his one book contract with a publisher (signed before the stroke) to write this memoir by recounting his story through blinking his left eye to spell out every letter of every single word to an interpreter/assistant who would recite a special frequency arranged alphabet to Jean-Do.

This fascinating and unbelievable pretext sticks with the reader throughout the memoir, with ... Read More

i gotta say that i normally finish any erotica type book in hours. this book took me two + weeks to finish. i found the stories lame, non-interesting. as a lesbian myself, i felt offended that these stories were put together. after the first two pages of most of the stories, i had an idea where the story was going, didn't feel like reading the 'obvious' and poorly written sex scenes. so i skipped a lot of stories this way. and yeah even skipping the stories it still took me that long to finish it.

so glad i didn't waste my money buying this book. borrowed it from a friend who anticipated the book, then 'warned' me when i got it from her. when i returned the book it went to be used as a paper weight in her son's room or as a level to prop up a leaning tv in the play room.

The movie got dozens of poor reviews at Amazon, where readers of the book insisted the book was so much better. I happened to like the movie so I figured the book would be great. It was good, but I liked the movie better.

The book, an autobiographical work that describes Augusten Burroughs' bizarre adolescence, features a mother that is so dysfunctional, Joan Crawford seems like June Cleaver. Mom dumps Augusten at the home of her warped therapist whose family brings to mind a barely saner Addams family. Burroughs describes a series of incidents that colored his life, but the book also contains a definite understory of the boredom that comes from a life with no rules or obligations, including no school.

The movie has the extra intensity of an excellent cast, including Annette Benning, ... Read More

This is my first book by this writer, and I picked it up because the dust jacket promised a "read" about family, faith and football...a winning combination, I thought. This story was good enough to stick it out to the end, but frankly, I found the main characters fairly unlikeable. The mom of one of the most talented major college football stars of 2005 has a public image of perfection and success. She has hidden a less perfect past and present from her son, and some of her secrets and deceptions seem quite unfair to him. The son, who has promised to be pure, has given in to a couple of temptations, which he hides from mom and the sports world which has taken an interest in him. The family's best friend spills a couple of their secrets foolishly to his new lover, and that gives an unscrupulous sports agent real leverage ... Read More

I'm studying to be a Secondary English teacher and hope to use this book along with the first "Persepolis" in my classes. Satrapi illustrates her life in a charming and hilarious way, guaranteed to grab many types of readers and learners. After reading her graphic memoirs I have a better idea of what life in Iran for women is like as well as a thirst for more novels like this.

Ayano Yamane is all that needs to be said as her artwork is true beauty. A fantasy story with high yaoi content and some would consider non-con. If you enjoy her View Finder series you will like this one only it is more fantasy than View Finder which involves Yakuza vs Fantasy.

Ok, I'm straight but I bought this for my lady-friend. I figured she could use a book like this sort of the way I use the "BIG BOOK of BREASTS". It worked for me, heck whatever it takes right?

I live an hour away from Beech Creek, Alison Bechdel's tiny hometown and the setting for much of her graphic memoir Fun Home. I've always found the area oppressive: dark, looming mountains casting perpetual shadows on impoverished, dying valley towns. But after reading Fun Home, I revisited Beech Creek, to see Bechdel's childhood home and the grave of her father Bruce, and to remind myself of how cruelly ironic life can be.

Bruce Bechdel, a man who loves literature (in his early days he identified with F. Scott Fitzgerald; in his final days he reads Proust), an aesthete with a taste for the baroque detail of the Victorian era, and a creative and versatile designer of interior and exterior landscapes, is born and lives in rural central Pennsylvania, running the family funeral home and teaching at the local high ... 9.The Glass Menagerie (Signet Books) by: Tennessee Williams

Books : The Glass Menagerie (Signet Books)
This classic tale by Tennessee Williams captures the reader's emotions by so forcefully displaying those of its main characters. This is a story of longing and frustration, set in a frustrating time (The Great Depression). The story is narrated by Tom, who hates his factory job and desires to run to sea, but is the main support for his mother Amanda and sister Laura. The matriarchal Amanda clings desperately to the past, while fragile Laura is devastated more by shy self-consciousness than her slight disability. The plot is simple - helping Laura's social life - but moves at a relentless pace. We see Amanda pain her daughter with wistful talk of gentleman callers from a generation past, then place false hopes on the singular visit of Jim - with resulting further desperation and loneliness. This story tugs gently but relentlessly on ... Read More

I was somewhat disappointed in Imagining Reality, though Uncommon Emotions got high marks from me; therefore, I was initially hesitant when I found that this book was returning once again to Virginia and the sometimes suffocating group of friends who bogged Imagining Reality down. I was pleasantly surprised, and pleased that the author focused this book on two characters only peripherally involved in "the group." It's not that I don't like the group. In fact, Galli has created an interesting and ultimately lovable group of women. But sometimes juggling all of those forceful personalities dilutes the thrust of her narrative line.

That was not a problem here. Briony only moved to Virginia fairly recently. She's friends with the group, but also feels comfortable telling them to butt out. Except even she is unsuccessful in enforcing ... Read More
