I was expecting the Long Halloween to be great like Dark Knight Returns or Year One, but it didn't come close to measuring up. It was definitely solid, just not in the same ballpark. Sale's art is cool, and the coloring is beautiful, but some of the characters are a bit over-exaggerated for my taste. The Joker in particular was way overdone, and Batman himself was too muscled out. The Scarecrow and Catwoman were both very well done. Loeb's writing was decent, but nothing to get too excited about. There were some twists that I didn't see coming, but the dialog was a little mundane. Overall it was a solid book, and worth the price for sure. I will definitely check out their other collaborations (Dark Victory, When In Rome, etc.).

A mean, lazy kid with a bad attitude makes for a boring read. Don't waste your money.

Greg Heffley is back in another round of journal entries profusely illustrated with comics. Greg has plenty to gripe about, starting with his summer. His dad insisted he join the swim team, where he finally got over hiding from the starter gun bullet but managed to stay the worst swimmer on the team --- an experience that was "worse than being in middle school." One problem was that, because of the women's Water Jazz exercise class, the team had to swim in just two lanes. Another was that Greg had to wear his big brother Rodrick's outgrown skimpy Speedos, although his teammates got to wear trunks. How much did Greg hate being on the swim team? He actually tried to talk his dad into letting him join the Water Jazz exercisers instead.

The main thorn in Greg's side, though, is Rodrick. Rodrick is the ... Read More

I'm kind of disappointed--the comic version was hard to follow and it seemed like much more of an emphasis was placed on 'ooh, how much skin can we show' than how much character development & plot we can have. There's no development, the plot is very fuzzy and short, and we're just given more questions and no answers. I want to know what happened to Willow and Dawn and Xander and what the gang's been up to, instead of more bloody battles and what the heck, FAIRIES? I mean...there's demons and that kind of supernatural, but I really really didn't see fairies coming into this thing. Still, I have to say it's awesome, cause it's BUFFY, of course, and Joss is an incredibly sweet writer to actually want to continue the series, I just wish it was still televised or at least a movie, not a comic book, regular book ... If you are a "Guest":

ANYONE WHO HAD TRAVELED away from their family, culture and land, will find comfort in this book. It provides with rich metaphors and imagery of departure, culture shock, misunderstandings, confusion, adaptation--you name it!--all of those experiences an immigrant or a long-distance traveler is going through.

If you are a "Host":

Likewise, ANYONE WHO'D EVER MET A FOREIGNER, and had difficulty communicating, or had ever occupied oneself with a thought of what it means "to arrive somewhere" and what an experience of arrival to a land of no known customs and language may be like--will also benefit greatly from this presentation.

A popular novelist may be prone to looking at the whole of their oeuvre. They consider their past works, look to the future, and decide to write a graphic novel. What makes them do this? Is it the potential to reach whole new audiences? Is it the accessibility of the format? The trendiness of it all? Or it is something else? Could it be that graphic novels are the wave of the future? Could be. Certainly they offer an author a whole new way of looking at the literary format. Why an enterprising young man or woman - and man, could perhaps even take a fairy tale and do wondrous things with it. You could even, and maybe I'm just talking crazy stuff here, take the fairy tale of Rapunzel, slap it into a pseudo-cowboy/wizardry setting. Add in Newbery-Honor winner Shannon Hale, her brother, and a guy with the same last name who doesn't happen to be related ... Read More
