This was my first book from Head First, and i love it! The book uses an easy approach (besides the schema in each chapter) to make you understand the different patterns. I think the book is good for junior and mid senior people.

I love this book. It takes an interesting approach to teaching HTML by first introducing a topic, then driving it into your brain by giving you comics, crossword puzzles, and other fun things to do to test your knowledge. And, of course, it has many great practice problems where you actually build websites using not just the things from that chapter, but it combines everything you have learned so far throughout the book. This is another great book from O'Reilly publishers. They have other Headfirst books that I am definitely going to check out, because I just love this one. Five stars.

I decided to pick up this book because I had been using Javascript for years as a "garnish" on top of my web development, but usually only in the form of a few hacked-together utility functions and edited scripts. In truth, I was afraid of the language - it appeared to be a very inconsistent, buggy system that took arcane knowledge to master across browsers. After starting to work with a number of JS frameworks, I knew I needed to confront the language and learn it properly.

This book is possibly one of the best technical/programming related books I have had the pleasure of reading. It doesn't try to be a massive encyclopedic volume like most of my other technical books, so I didn't have to devote countless hours and days pushing through lengthy filler. Every section contains brief information ... Read More

5.Learning Python (2nd Edition) by: Mark Lutz, David Ascher

Books : Learning Python (2nd Edition)
Like my title suggests, if you have programming experience and you do not mind or have little trouble reading the Python documentation in a online fashion then its probably not absolutely necessary that you have to buy the book.

However, the author is very good in instilling the nature of Python programming and he's good at getting you to think about the concepts but this book is definitely not a cookbook. Last thing is that it doesn't concentrate on the GUI nor library usage etc as it's mission is simply to teach you about the core of Python

In short: this book isn't worth its price.

The major part of the volume of the book is code and corresponding explanations. If the reader is a decent programmer, he can actually figure it all out by himself given algorithms. Otherwise it makes more sense to get a book on data structures, or Python, or general algorithm construction and learn the basics there.

The algorithms/methods presented in this book are not really specific to "collaborative intelligence" (with a couple of exceptions). The author gives a brief overview of the techniques and then dives into great details on how to implement it. In reality unless you are working on a toy site, you don't really need that code, since it wouldn't scale or fit the production environment. You'll need the math model / algorithm to come up ... This book is downright comprehensive and thoroughly deserves its "definitive guide" title.

But, the example scripts the author gives are long and deadly boring, which is why I won't give it five stars.

To "get" JavaScript, you need shorter scripts which are easier to learn from.

My recommendation is to use this book in conjunction with the w3schools website.

Book description from O'Reilly:

"Windows Vista: The Missing Manual offers complete and comprehensive coverage of all five versions of Vista. In his inimitable witty style, New York Times columnist and bestselling author David Pogue illuminates this subject with clear technical insight and hard-nosed objectivity. He explains Vista's features clearly and thoroughly, revealing which work well and which don't. Written for beginners, veteran stand-alone PC users, and those who know their way around a network, this jargon-free guide is the book that should have been in the box!

9.Architectural Graphics by: Frank Ching

Books : Architectural Graphics
I know that Ching is revered in the field and is recommended by virtually all, but I'm just not feeling the love, especially for this particular book. The graphics in the book have a "sketchy" look I don't just don't find appealing or inspiring. A more serious problem is the way the information is weighted: there are pages of illustration/discussion about simple things like line weights and triangles, which would lead one to assume this is a beginner's book. That would be fine, but as the book progresses, the depth of information dissapates, so that a beginner who tries to follow instructions, for instance, on preparing a perspective or isometric drawing would be completely unable to do so. In this way, the book reminds me of certain assemble-it-at-home instructions: Step one is to get out your tools, step two is to take ... Read More

I'm a private math tutor and am using this book as a Friday reward for two sixth grade girls who are studying algebra one with me. It is challenging in some interesting ways. It is full of story problems to be unraveled, about two kids who are detectives. I had given it to my daughter, who was the first year teacher and she said her kids loved it more than any other part of math. They can be solved alone or in groups. I really recommend this book.
