Although you can read this book in just a few short hours, the relatively few words found in "Of Mice and Men" carry tremendous weight. From the first paragraph Steinbeck manages to paint a vivid picture of the environment, taking great care to simultaneously describe both the beauty of nature and the agony of the story's characters.

I'd long considered Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises" to be the greatest American 20th century novel, and after reading "Of Mice and Men" last evening it's clear this story has assumed the #1 spot in my personal list of greatest novellas.

Yup, I'm one of the freaks who actually likes this book, despite my roommate's information that it is highly melodramaticized. I don't care. I think it's great writing, and I love the interspersing stories that have nothing to do with the plot, and yet are so insightful.

Sorry, but I was actually touched.

Walking through middle school corridors, I'd spy kids in the grade above mine carrying John Steinbeck's "The Pearl" and think them lucky. Judging from the cover it was some kind of sea adventure, probably involving sharks and Jacqueline Bisset. This was back in the 1970s, and I was obviously confused.

Flash forward to the present. Feeling nostalgic, I decide to take the book on after years of wondering. It was certainly short, and Steinbeck is a classic writer, so it seemed a good idea.

A terse morality play about the pitfalls of materialism and the depravity of man, "The Pearl" is clearly a think piece rather than a conventional novel focused on characters and storyline. It made me think, too: However bad middle school was, it could have been worse.

Hard to imagine a greater defining work of the 20th century ... the story is so complex and multilayered, and yet so simple and clear in its narrative. The reader finds a lot to ponder in its pages, and many times I had to put the book down for a moment and merely think about its truth. Like the following:

"And I feel that I am a man. And I feel that a man is a very important thing -- maybe more important than a star. This is not theology. I have no bent toward the gods. I have a new love for that glittering instrument, the human soul. It is a lovely and unique thing in the universe."

The story of Adam Trask, his sons and his good friends -- Samuel Hamilton, the handy-man philosopher; and Lee, the house servant and wise man -- is a parable of how we all struggle between the ... Read More

I wasn't sure what to expect when I read East of Eden. I certainly wasn't expecting to be swept away in Steinbeck's eloquent prose or on the edge of my seat, barely able to wait for the ending and yet not really wanting the book to end. At times this was difficult to read--Steinbeck is a master of showing the depravity of humanity--and at other moments you're blown away by his understanding of the good in all of us as well. He shows us that life is about the choices that we make, and not about the blood in us. Genetics have nothing to do with what our life can become, and Steinbeck works this into the novel beautifully. This book grips you and doesn't let you go even after you finish it. It tears away at your pre-conceived notions about life--and takes your breath away with the truth of humanity and what ... One of my all time favorite books has been Tortilla Flat, and for reasons unknown, i waited a long time to finally read Cannery Row.

Both novels center around a motley crew of small town, simple folk, who all seem to have sound moral qualities otherwise lacking in those of privilege. Steinbeck suggests to us here that success spoils us, and the best human qualities; kindness, honesty, generosity--- are often prevalent of those of least success (which apparantly is the trade-off). There is no better example of this than in Mach and his crew who inhibit the Palace Flophouse.

One of the other great things about Cannery Row is Steinbecks mastery of local color and vernacular, and truly brings the town to life.

Travels with Charley is one of my favorite books and one of the few that I have read over and over again. I want here to especially recommend the Gary Sinise reading of the book for Classics on Cassette. Sinise has played and directed in productions of other Steinbeck works, and he reads the book in an engaging manner that I suspect reflects his own love for the book. I have listened to part of the Recorded Books version on CD and enjoyed it far less. I do hope the Gary Sinise version comes out on CD soon.

I was strolling the bookshop at the Monterey Bay aquarium and saw that book that I hadn't read in many years. I am recommending it, because as a seasoned adult I was able to get a whole different reading experience from it, this second time around!

Review - John Steinbeck "The Log from the Sea of Cortez"

Our Once-in-a-Lifetime trip driving through Baja would not have been complete without this work. While not the Steinbeck to which most of us are familiar, this work shows us his dedication to our Planet and rare personal insight to his feelings on everything from War to Ecology, a term most of us learned in the 1960's and what he "is" in 1940.
We read this book, each passenger to the driver, while passing miles of small towns, ejitos, military checkpoints and Cities. Under a Palapa sitting in a hammock... a great way to pass the time on the beach; On the Sea of Cortez.
Redundant as Logs are wont to be, and a great resource for those studying tide pools. His stories about meeting the people were our favorite parts of the Log; we relate in a more informed ... Read More
