This book is profoundly important because it provides detailed research-based insight into how and why certain people attain excellence in all fields of endeavor.

The short answer is that one must work and practice quite hard for many years, ideally starting from a young age, in a deliberate way which involves continually stretching oneself. The effort is usually difficult and therefore often not fun, and so the motivation to push on must be fueled by a strong inner drive, perhaps aided by extrinsic factors such as encouragement, coaching, rewards, etc. Talent, intelligence, good memory, and other innate gifts may help, but they're not as vital as people commonly believe.

But don't let my short answer suffice, or steer you to skip reading the book. The book is rich ... Read More

GTD is a great book. I've read it cover to cover. Now, I'm re-reading it slower and implementing many of David Allen's tips. I highly recommend the book for anyone struggling to keep up with their busy lives. This book will pay off for you. Buy it, read it, do it.

I bought this book to bring to the first meetings of a newly formed non-profit group. After reading it, not only did I find applications for the rules of order in the group but also at work, where a structured meeting that adhered to a certain time limit was greatly appreciated. Very good examples throughout the book and easy introduction to terminology. This is a survey book however, so don't expect extensive listings of rules or details.

5.The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick) by: Seth Godin

This is an interesting little book exploring a very important set of concepts. But despite the subtitle, it does a poor job of explaining when to quit and when to keep going.

Godin's theory is clear enough. The book falls short on practical guidelines and specific, real-world examples that will help the reader decipher their own complicated situation. It's like an outline for a how-to book, without most of the content that would make it usable. I hope that Godin will develop his concepts in enough detail to make them teachable, and then write a second book that really does the job.

`Go Put Your Strengths to Work' gives us six clear steps for increasing our personal productivity. Author, Marcus Buckingham, draws our attention to several myths, for example that as we age we improve in the areas we have always been weakest. In fact such a myth only perpetuates a tendency to focus on what we are not good at. Instead we should be shifting our time management to focus upon the areas where we work best

Naturally, Buckingham's core piece of advice is that we will not be able to build our strengths if all we can see is what we are not good at. Once we truly clarifying our strengths we are better set to enter a workplace and soar. Not only that, but knowing exactly what you are good at and how to articulate it in a job interview is a fantastic advantage to have.

The author tries to compare meetings with movies and to convince people that a meeting with conflicts is the most interesting one. His reasoning is that the reason people like to watch movies is conflict that a movie depicts.

In reality, no one like to see conflicts happen to themselves, though they are fascinated with conflicts happened to others with which they have no relationship.

However, that does not say that there is no way to deal with conflicts. Conflict is reality that exists in our daily lives. The constructive way to resolve conflicts is what the author describes in his another book, "Five dysfunctions of a team".

People have egos. Inevitable conflicts can easily invoke ego to a level that destroys a team. Why? Because any solution to a conflict will favor one ... Read More

This book does have some unnecessary self-promotion and name dropping and may present certain political views you don't agree with. On the other hand there is a core to this book, one about how to use language to present your ideas in a way that will have the best chance of convincing people of them, that is very worthwhile. While it would have been a better book without the fluff around the core, it is still worth reading.
