I really enjoyed this book, full of entertaining, believable, sympathetic characters and the alchemy of happiness and melancholy that Amy Tan does so well. The pace of the book seems a little slow in the first half, but once I had found its rhythm and gotten settled in it was quite enjoyable. I think the intro on the dust jacket, which focusses on the main characters' captivity in Burma/Myanmar, does the book something of a disservice. This element of the plot starts comparatively late in the book, and is more of a culmination really than the main focus. When i got this book i was amazed for it's nothing like the 12th planet. It's as though Sitchin forgoes any and all explanations and simply offers us the writings of Enki as a kind of Bible book. So the entire book is just a translation of Enki's writings that have been found in various sources but in reading the book one sees that this is in itself so profound and enlightening that one doesn't miss any explanations much [sometimes you find yourself thinking "but what about...?", though]. To understand what's out there you MUST read this book. When i started looking into UFO's and deeper truths i asked some friends online what they thought would be good to read and that's why i bought this book and they were right. We really enjoyed book one, though we didn't like that Sarah teaches children that she can fall in a river and never drown because she believes she won't. She fell after her mother told her to stay away. Book 2, has a great story about friendship, but sends a bad message about children leaving their home in the middle of the night to go into the forest and meet friends. No fear, no danger! It teaches that even though a character is killed, that character comes back to life in physical form; and some kids may actually attempt to fly without understanding the mental aspect the book tries to impart. We've enjoyed all the written material for grown ups, but unsure whether we will go onto book 3 for our 9 year old. Book 2 feels a little pointless so far.

I have read this book three times - bought this copy for my daughter. It is fun, full of wisdom, and hard to put down. A great gift for the open minded and curious!

I have read a few books of Rabbi Kushner that explore Jewish spirituality, and liked them very match. So I was intrigued by his exploration of a new, to my knowledge, genre. It started somewhat slowly, but quickly accelerated into a wonderful ride through the time and space, which only true mystic can create. I gained some new incites into kabbalistic concept of multiple universes, which escaped me for a long time. What a joy! Thank you Rabbi.

Years ago, I stumbled onto one of the short stories in this book in another anthology, and loved it. It was called the Erl-King, but I couldn't remember the author, and was never able to find it again. I ordered The Bloody Chamber for the retelling of the Bluebeard story, and was thrilled to find that the Erl-King was one of the other stories. All the stories in this book are wonderful. They are all dark and bloody as any good fairy tale is, and beautifully written. I pined over the Erl-king for years, so it was a joy to reread it, and to find the other tales inside just as good.
