This book is filled with concrete examples of important details that are left out of history books because they will create controversy and might make students ask questions.

Instead the goal of history has become to bore a student with unrelated and mostly useless facts - that any bored person will do his/her best to avoid. The human brain learns and remembers what is emotionally stimulating. If you tell history as a story with drama then it will tend to stick, "Emotion is the glue that causes history to stick". James W. Loewen

"Study after study shows that students successfully resist learning "facts" like these. Indeed they resist all too well. When two thirds of American seventeen year olds cannot place the Civil War in the right half-century or 22 percent ... Read More

Books : Student Leadership Practices Inventory, The Deluxe Facilitator's Package Set (The Leadership Practices Inventory)
We've used this text in a graduate school class I'm completing, and it has been very helpful in crystallizing my thoughts about leadership. The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership presented here are backed by solid research and would help just about anyone become a better leader. I give it four stars only because it is unnecessarily long. There's a good 300 page book in the 400 pages I read - a sure sign the authors are in love with their own writing. Still, very solid overall.

Clayton Christensen has gained fame in researching how disruptive technologies are best brought to market in the world of business. He applies the results of this research to hypothesize how education methods uniquely tailored to each student through the use of computer led education are likely to be adopted.

The key observation that Professor Christensen makes is that each student has different intellegences, including linguistic, logical-methematical, spatial, kinesthetic, etc. The classroom, by being forced to standardize on a teaching method for a particular subject, cannot appropriately adapt the teaching of each subject to the learning and intelligence patterns of each student. Computer-based education can overcome the standardized approach, however. He argues that the adoption of computer ... Read More

I have just finished reading this book and am so grateful to Ross Greene for having written it. I am a long time follower of his work, having read his two previous books, "The Explosive Child" and "Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem-Solving Approach", and having attended several of his presentations. I am the mother of a teenager who was an explosive child, and I am also a pediatric occupational therapist and special education instructor. This new book is valuable to me for all of those roles.

The way this book is set up makes it very user friendly. It combines both the background and strategies of the CPS model with ongoing scenarios commonly found in schools. In addition there are excellent questions and answers found at the end of each chapter. As I was reading them, I could think of the exact ... Read More

As a teacher this is my bible- meant it to be 5 stars...A fabulous resource for classroom management. It teaches teachers how to set boundaries in a loving and logical way. Children learn to take responsibility for their behavior in this kind of environment.Children want to know where their boundaries are and when you are consistent and apply them gently the outcome is a self-controlled child. Also must- reading for parents Parenting With Love And Logic (Updated and Expanded Edition)and Discipline With Love and Logic Resource Guide.

Like the famous non-sense poem, the book feels like it ought to make sense, but it never does. As you read, you will have the feeling of impending meaning, and that in the next paragraph, or on the next page, or in the next chapter, everything will come together and you will have your moment of clarity. Never happens.

Whatever you think Paulo Freire means, you are wrong.

I graduated as a valedictorian from a high school that is not known for its academic excellence. I did not feel much pride in my achievement - though I know I should have because it indicates I worked hard in school. I was lucky and had quite a few great teachers that did try to teach me to think -- not just memorize stuff. However, I had many more teachers that I could describe much less enthusiastically. I was valedictorian though and took and passed several AP classes too. But I did horribly when I got to college because of the poor preparation I was given in high school. The skills I needed to get that valedictorian status was not enough for even a 3.0 average my first semester of college.

The Global Achievement Gapdoes a great job of discussing how we need to change schools today so that the students are better prepared for ... Read More

Dr. Mel Levine has worked for a long time with children so that they could grow up feeling responsible, successful and with good self esteem. He has spent a great deal of time working with experts in many disciplines in order to understand how children learn and how to help them if they are struggling.

He has broken learning into several areas of input, processing, storage, retrieval and output. Parents and educators can use this information to understand where a child may be having problems and then use ideas from his book to help turn things around for the child/student.

What the book does let us know is that learning is not easy but more like rocket science, in that it is a combination of innate abilities and deficits of the child, and the abilities of the adults to work with the abilities and help remediate the ... Read More

Because we teachers are now the sole teacher/parent figure in many children's lives (due to "parents" with no parenting skills!) this is a wonderful "manual" for teaching children of all ages life's important tools for success. It's chock full of rules and procedures that I learned from my parents as a child. The generation in school right now has been deprived of these life tools because their parents don't have a clue; no responsibility, no manners, etc. I teach Kindergarten and I use many of these "rules" with my students everyday. I pray that they still have them in the 3rd grade!
