The research behind this book is impressive and the theories are engaging. On the whole, it's well written and it all makes good sense. Most of these firms have done well over time, while some have not (e.g., Fannie May, Circuit City). What Good to Great does not cover is the role of serendipity and changing market conditions. Nor does it focus on customers. You may want to check out Firms of Endearment for another perceptive.

Books : Thinking Strategically: The Competitive Edge in Business, Politics and Everyday Life
What you can learn from this book can change your perception of the world around you. After reading this I really felt like I'd tapped into a resource of information (the field of game theory) that I should have been exposed to years ago.

I won't use this as a business person or as a politician, but I feel it's important to see the tools these folks are using (believe me, they're using them!). As the title says already - "everyday life."

When you realize that other people are using strategies even if they haven't read a book like this, then you can realize that life is more like a game than you realized, and that to make things work best for you and those in your life, you've got to use strategy!

So, I would recommend this book as an essential tool for anyone ... Read More

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found the information eye-opening. I was thrilled to read about so many creative and resourceful people (actual case studies) who are truly commited to serving those who live on $1-$2 a day around the world. Their needs are real and the heros are those creative individuals who are 'pushing the envelop' in serving them while still making an honest profit. The case studies are also available either via a CD in the back of the book or via the website in the paperback edition. This is an EXCELLENT read.

Wow! This is a must read book for just about everyone, even those who have not entered the information age yet.

In a world that incessantly grows complex and beyond the understanding of the common man, one simply cannot cope with the new risks and threats that arise on a daily basis. This leads to innocent mistakes that can cause us serious harm.

Often - techies and geeks believe technology is the answer - and to an extent that is true; however, the human element is the weakest link - and this book shows that in a nice way.

Read this book to understand the ploys used, the tactics of a vicious mind (or mischevious), and how easy it is for a vast majority of the people to fall victim. The good thing is that you will get ideas on what you and your company should be ... Read More

In much the same way that the classic "The Mythical Man Month" by Frederick P. Brooks (see my review) has repeatedly been sighted across two decades by numerous publications, this work by Ross, Weill, and Robertson has been referenced so many times in industry periodicals over the last couple years that it needs to be read at least once by everyone in the business world involved in this space. A cursory review of the texts currently available on enterprise architecture shows quite simply that this subject is still rather new. And experience has shown that the topic of enterprise architecture itself can at times cause confusion, misunderstanding, and even divisiveness within a firm, with reasons ranging from difficulty of definition to business or IT politics. The authors of this book tackle the subject well, and ... Read More

Neither. I think. Super Crunchers is a fascinating study of the ascension of data analysis and statistics in decision and policy-making in all realms of life, from business to government to health. Ayres shows us how the ability to collect millions upon millions of data points and number crunch them to study trends, analyze relationships and make predictions, has created a schism between professionals (lawyers, educators and doctors) for example, who use their experience and expertise with intution to come to decisions, and data crunchers, who us the power of computers to do the same. Ayres uses significant case studies to demonstrate how super crunching consistently beats intuition.

The caveat is that data crunchers are also human, ultimately, and may make errors in selecting the inputs and variables ... Read More

This book is designed to be an instruction book for the video course for the ITIL foundations course. This costs around $130 USD currently for book and video or less with a used book. I recommend both as the video course is what you need. The course book is dense and written for those who taken instruction or video before using it.

The ITIL is complex, but learnable for the patient. I am studying for the exam and the course / book is the best value out there.

ISACA, Global Knowledge have more expensive version.
However for the foundations level certification please ask yourself if the others are worth the difference?

If you have any of Dan Kennedy's courses or have studied his work for any number of years then you probably don't need this book. I did find some new ideas that maybe I could try and I've been doing info publishing since 1995.

Any good entrepreneur will keep investing in marketing books, courses, etc. even for one good idea or even to refresh what we already know.

If you aren't really expecting anything groundbreaking and want to refresh your knowledge, collect some powerful copy for future use, and want to gather a few ideas you can potentially try that you haven't before then it may be your worthwhile to get this book.

However, if you are a self-professed know-it-all who has read everything Kennedy and you are looking for something new then this is not what you need.

By the way, I'll bet ... Read More

You're looking at this title because 1) you are hoping for a book that helps explain in a little more detail some of the obscure settings in SCCM, and 2) you want a book that discusses common pitfalls and issues administrators might run into. Keep looking. As I read through this I became more and more frustrated over the realization that I was simply rereading (albeit in condensed form) the product documentation that comes free with from Microsoft. If you haven't read the product documentation, don't worry - you will as beyond the core content, practically every page has a "for more information, go to [fill in Microsoft Technet URL to product documentation section here]" pull-out.

To add to my disappointment, despite this title being a relatively (to this review) new release, and despite the SCCM update having been in beta for ... Read More
