"In 1984, [Warren] Buffet returned to Columbia to give a speech commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of "Security Analysis". During that speech, he presented his own investment record as well as those of Ruane, Knapp, and Schloss [other successful investment managers who were students of Graham at Columbia]. In short, each of these men posted investment results that blew away the returns of the overall market. Buffett noted that each of the portfolios varied greatly in the number and type of stocks, but what did not vary was the managers' adherence to Graham's investment principles."

It is difficult to encapsulate Benjamin Graham's investing style in a few sentences or paragraphs. Readers are strongly urged to refer to his "The Intelligent Investor" to obtain ... Read More

Check the "Surprise Me" link for this "Financial Statements" book and read what appears -- the "excerpt" link only shows a title page. It is always a good idea to check the merchandise. If you think the author is in a little deep for what you want, then take a look at the content for another Amazon offering, "Business Basics Bestseller 1." It takes a broad look at a business' financial numbers, more as business and less as accounting.

The Dummies books are really good. I have read several of them. However, it is always smart (you're not really a dummy) to comparison shop before you click the order button. Just to be sure you are getting what you want, check out "Business Basics Bestseller 1" which is also available here on Amazon. The link with the review can get you there and then you can come back.

I bought this book in order to better understand financial statements and financial ratios for investing, even though the authors wrote it more for managers and not investors. Other books I have purchased for this purpose usually fell into one of three categories: the book defined only the very basics and took such a simple approach with regards to interpreting statements it was a waste of time, the book was for professionals and so far advanced that it didn't bother to have a helpful introduction, or the book started slowly and did a good job at the beginning but then went into overdrive with few explanations after a good introduction and I ended up getting lost.

"Financial Intelligence" is by far the best book from start to finish on interpreting financial statements, what they mean, ... Read More

This is a great example of how to develop deep relationships with your clients. The sincerity and quality of the questions are what really matter. One of the most difficult issues we deal with is how to put together a plan for our clients, without their open and honest communication the job can be left incomplete. This book will help you in asking those questions.

Before I read this book, I knew close to nothing about accounting. This book gave all the basics and provided helpful insight to managing a small business through accounting. The workbook-like sytle gets you involved with the subject and makes the learning process actually FUN! I recommend this book to ANYONE who wants to learn accounting -- even if you "think" you know it already.

Books : How to Read a Financial Report: Wringing Vital Signs Out of the Numbers
This is a somewhat strange introduction to the reading and interpretation of financial statements. The book is not basic enough for newcomers, yet it is not thorough enough for experienced people either.

The main problems I have with this book are 1) the language is sometimes difficult to understand especially in the introductory chapters of the book, and 2) the book gives a lot of "don'ts" but not many "do's" - for instance regarding the measurement of cash flow, the author tells you all the wrong ways of doing it, but neglects to tell you the right way of measuring cash flow.

I have given the book 3 stars because it does have some interesting parts. But if you're new to accounting I would instead recommend getting the book Financial Statements by Thomas Ittelson.

First off, I agree with the other reviewer who said that the author and publisher could have made this book much more useful by adding the 3 term sheets to the book (Investor Favorable, Middle of Road, Company Favorable), instead of jumbling all the information in one term sheet and dispersing it within the body of the text.

Furthermore, this book is very poorly edited - the content is good, but it reads like a second draft rather than a completed product.

A few paragraphs repeat themselves practically word for word within the space of a few pages (bothersome, considering this is a 100 page book), and the author sometimes glosses over valuation numbers, ownership percentages and the like in his explanation of redemption rights, dilution terms and subsequent rounds of investment.
