I wrote a review a few hours ago, and I wanted to write another that approaches the complaints of people that disliked this book.

Many people have pointed out thing books like "emotional intelligence" that were published many years ago and over similar subjects. I agree, they do, but Gladwell covers them in a far more interesting and memorable way. Also I think Gladwell's coining a new term "practical intelligence" isn't a way of hiding his inspirations. Practical intelligence is a term that is immediately can get the gist of. Practical intelligence is knowledge that can be used to do something. Whereas "emotional intelligence" sounds like a contradiction in terms.

I found that when I read Gladwell's books I began to like him on a personal level. And I actually felt ... Read More

After reading this wonderful biography, I want to thank Mr. Buffett for allowing the story of his life to be told, warts and all, and Alice Schroeder for doing such a great job in writing this book. I finished reading The Snowball, Warren Buffett and the Business of Life a few days ago and I truly miss not being able to read another chapter of Mr. Buffett's life.

There is so much to comment upon in this book and much has already been said. However, what I would like to focus my comments on is the wisdom contained on the pages of this book if it is read in a thoughtful manner. This is not a book that contains an algorithm designed to enrich the reader in buying securities. It is a book about the Business of Life. It is about a highly gifted man who developed his business skills and work ... Read More

Like a lot of good investment advice, Peter Schiff's may have come a little early. Commodity prices have gone into free fall since the summer of 2008 when the book was written, while the US dollar has strengthened dramatically. However Schiff's logic is fundamentally sound - much like the gang at The Daily Reckoning, Schiff tells us why we can expect things to turn out as he predicts. It is hard to imagine how time will not ultimately prove his thesis correct.

The book is interesting, with some enlightening stories and amusing anecdotes.

However, I take exception Mr. Gladwell's touting of the small-changes-can-lead-to-big-consequences 'butterfly effect' philosophy as if it were his own. Either he is not very well versed in the world of chaos mathematics (which would be disappointing, scientifically), or he is not giving due deference to all those who came before him in developing New Math. I'm not sure which scenario is more disturbing, but the book has the feel of being disconnected from reality, due to his disregarding of those who established the field.

Peter Schiff is a professional doomsayer who strongly makes the case that the American economy is going to hell in a hand basket. Fast.

He lays out this case in his book, CRASH PROOF. Given the backdrop of recent months, it is hard to say he is wrong. The book came out @ February of 2007 so Schiff is prescient in a number of realms.

If doom and gloom is your cup of tea, you have come to the right book. Schiff sees over consumption, inflation and misguided government policies as providing a recipe for economic and financial disaster. My gripe is that the book's title oversells and does not really constitute truth in advertising. I estimate that only about one-fourth of the book is prescriptive in offering ways to "crash proof" yourself and your finances. Schiff's solutions revolve around ... Read More

The book deserves attention, not necessarily for the qualities of the writer, but for introducing a biased opinion in the world that was supposed to pertain only to "un-opinionated" academics. Worth reading if you have an open mind, no matter of the direction chosen in career and life. It gives another type of perspective on improbability than the establishment.

(Memo to those who do: I heard yesterday that he may be at work on a new book right now, so don't get too mad about your current disappointment...)

As other reviewers have noted, this is NOT by Michael Lewis. Rather, the same guy who gave us Liar's Poker: Rising Through the Wreckage on Wall Street and The New New Thing: A Silicon Valley Story has worked through a variety of sources in search of the best reportage on past financial market panics. At the time Lewis was toiling on assembling this (the last story in the anthology is dated in January 2008), it must have been hard to imagine how topical this would become. Certainly, the readings offer clear insight, from many different points of view, on how financial manias emerge, grow, build and then burst, triggering, yes, panic. In light of the events of the last six months ... Read More

From what I have read of negative reviews here- most people who don't like the book don't like it because they disagree with it. The idea itself is quite controversial, and I'm not sure I fully agree with Gladwell, but the manner in which he presents it is entertaining and enjoyable to read. His anecdotes do show some examples where "thin slicing" can come quite in handy, but he doesn't say this should overrule thought out processes- his point is that sometimes we can "thin slice" and be right, when overanalyzing leads to the wrong conclusion.
The book is very well written and great for anyone who likes to have something to talk about. I also recommend this book to anyone who likes the book "Freakonomics" because Gladwell uses a similar anecdotal writing stye to Levitt and Dubner.
You shouldn't let your doubts keep you from reading ... Read More

This book is profoundly important because it provides detailed research-based insight into how and why certain people attain excellence in all fields of endeavor.

The short answer is that one must work and practice quite hard for many years, ideally starting from a young age, in a deliberate way which involves continually stretching oneself. The effort is usually difficult and therefore often not fun, and so the motivation to push on must be fueled by a strong inner drive, perhaps aided by extrinsic factors such as encouragement, coaching, rewards, etc. Talent, intelligence, good memory, and other innate gifts may help, but they're not as vital as people commonly believe.

But don't let my short answer suffice, or steer you to skip reading the book. The book is rich with important details and examples which are vital to take ... Read More
