Books : The Sacred Pipe: Black Elk's Account of the Seven Rites of the Oglala Sioux : Black Elk, Holy Man of the Oglala
Black Elk is and was sacred Elder. Through his life we are given this knowledge. He has helped many to understand the way of the Lakota; following the natural law. While not all Lakota follow the traditional ways as closely as they did before the arrival of the white man, they are still connected to these rites and inhierently understand these teachings. It's only to outside world that these things become suprising moments of clarity. Joseph Epes Brown took time before it was too late, to record these teachings, which is a blessing and a gift of knowledge to all who would read, understand and heed these words. If you wish to learn what dwells is in the hearts of Native American people, you would do well to open this book and your minds.

Books : The Journey of Crazy Horse
I agree with the other reviewers comments on this book. How accurate are passed down stories from ancestors many generations back. While reading the book I had no idea which "facts" were from historical accounts or which came from passed down stories. Also, "the white man" as portrayed by the author is evil, selfish, greedy, and full of lies while the Indians were brave, valiant, honest, and trustworthy. yeahhhh right. I have read enough factual historical accounts that show Indians as being every bit as corrupt as the white man. The only difference is the whites were greater in number and were intellectually superior when it came to developing weapons. The author is clearly biased. I don't recall him ever putting down the Indians for their savage scalping or pointless raids on other ... Read More

I personally didn't mind the interpretation of a white man (Neidhart) translating Black Elk's legendary stories into a published work of art. The book was a very easy read and insinuated deep emotion and spiritual awareness. I higly recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in Indian culture and tense relations between Indians and Cowboys (Federal Government)

Books : Where White Men Fear to Thread: The Autobiography of Russell Means
As a person of part-American Indian ancestry, I have always been proud of my Indian roots more than any other, and after reading this book, I am even more proud. Russell Means is one of the leading Indian patriots and prime movers at a time when it looked like all Indians would eventually become assimilated into the mainstream, thanks to the genocidal policies of the US government. Russell Means was born just in time to ensure that someone was there to remind the American Indians of their pride and purpose in life. Mr. Means has dedicated his life in preserving the tribal heritages and languages of all tribes. He is against the homogenization of the tribes and rightfully believes in the preservation of individual tribal cultures. This is something that must be done before those languages, cultures, songs and dances become ... Read More

Books : Ishi in Two Worlds: A Biography of the Last Wild Indian in North America
It isn't too common for me to start crying by the ending of a book. But this story brought me to tears. I really came to admire this reticent and dignified man, and the people who befriended him, and it saddens me to think of all the other people like Ishi who were mercilessly slaughtered. Ishi is really a representative of that hunted and slaughtered class, a class that existed right here on this California soil, and a slaughter which was perpetrated by people I thought I admired: the good old cowboy types.

This is a story of epic character (Ishi's) and epic cruelty. Please do not misunderstand me: this is not a book which has any intent of guilt-tripping anyone. But it did take me by surprise, because you can talk about slavery all day long, or the Nazis, and I feel no relation, no nexus between myself ... Read More

Books : Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas (50th Anniversary Edition) (50th Anniversary Edition)
Crazy Horse has held a deep and sacred passion for me since childhood, I thoroughly enjoyed Mari Sandoz's book but can not understand why her account has Hump dying at the hands of the Snake's and in a time frame before Crazy Horse's own death(1877), one has only to read Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and view a photo of Hump dated in 1890 at Fort Bennett, South Dakota, additional research indicates that Hump died long after Crazy Horse. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could clarify this for me.

Books : Ojibwa Warrior: Dennis Banks and the Rise of the American Indian Movement
Dennis Banks has much to answer for before he can call himself a "Warrior" ... He needs to disclose his role, and the role of the AIM leadership, in the kidnapping and murder of Anna Mae Aquash, with whom he had an affair while his wife was with child. Anna Mae is a heroine to those who remember her role in the fight for Indian rights -- especially land rights and the restoration of treaty agreements. She was murdered, according to court testimony, because AIM leadership believed she was an FBI informer, a charge later proved false. Who in the AIM leadership ordered this murder? Who knew? Who could have stopped it? Anyone interested in this period of history knows there are troubling, unanswered questions about whom we hold accountable for this crime. Dennis Banks needs to come forward with full disclosure.
