Over 1,000 reviews? Over 600 negatives? You'd think people would wait to review books until after they read them. All the Obamabots must now know that surges really do work ;)
Please, there is no reason to read any book to know that Obama is an extreme Leftist who intends to turn our country into the Leader of the Communist New World Order.
Anyone who believes that ordinary rural working-class Americans are just "Bitter folks who cling to guns and religion" doesn't deserve to have his vulgar rhetoric on our airwaves. The job of the President is to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Obama's comment proves that he does not even respect the Constitution himself, and obviously he does not represent Americans who do believe in their Constitutional Rights.

I wanted to see what inspired Oprah to say this was one of the most outstanding books she ever read. It was the biggest bunch of fluff I have ever read. It says we need to work together to accomplish goals and to end partisan bickering. Then it says unlike Republicans who cut student loans or spent millions to defeat Democarts. It is the life of a man who had not even been in the U.S. Senate yet. How does someone with no background win an election and the next month get a three book deal for 1.9 million and it go unnoticed? This was a novice who got paid to write whatever popped into his head for the sake of money.

I was happy to see that this book was added to Oprah's book club, this ment that millions who never knew of this book would read it or at least hear it's story. I read this in college as part of the debates on wither the US should have entered WW2 before 1941. When I was done I felt that I had been robbed. Not that I didn't enjoy the book but that noone had told me about it before. I would rather have read this in Middle or High school then some of the junk books they forced on us, and while Romeo and Joilet is a fine work I belive that the story Wiesel gives us is more timly and would give kids something to think about.
The story of Wiesel and his Father in the camps should make anyone who reads this book take note of what happens when Fascism and National Socalism are given a foothold.Sadly we ... Read More

Barack Obama is an incredible story teller. Reading "Dreams from My Father" was a most enlightening experience. By the time we got to Africa I felt like Obama was a dear friend sharing his life with me. Meeting family for the first time in Africa felt like me going home to meet my ancestors. The reading was delicious and I didn't want it to end. I urge my family and friends to meet the man who is making history and spend some quality time with him. It feels honest and it's so obvious that it was written before there were any presidential aspirations. A documented story of a man before any publicity spin.

I absolutely loved this book. It was deeply inspiring. I stumbled onto it. My sister-in-law read it for her book club. I picked it up after her because we were at the beach and I needed something to read. What a surprise! I am a transplanted Texan and grew up in Ft. Worth so that was especially fun to see my home cowtown all hashed out. Much more than that, though, was the wonderful true story and the jaw dropping inspiration of Debbie Moore and all she touched. She really walked the walk and never wanted any glory. Denver and Ron found each other just when they needed it most. I'm glad they haven't caught and released and that Denver made it back from that scary drive to Colorado.

With Marjane Satrapi's animated film playing in theatres and available on disc, I almost jumped at the chance to read her book, the part-comic/part-memoir of Satrapi's childhood in Tehran, Iran.

To avoid confusion with more current events, `Marji' (as she was called as a child) recalls her upbringing in a Marxist family, the fall of the last Shah regime, the Islamic Revolution of 1979, and Iran's war against Iraq in the 80's. While Satrapi's words are powerful enough to get in your head and stay there, her simple black-and-white drawing style captures the laughter, the tears, and the raw emotion felt throughout the story. Though only an individual account, the story itself is quite vivid in describing how Iran had left a world of tyranny and chaos--only to wind up in another. Though controversial ... Read More

I've had this book on my shelf since published in 1991 and decided this week to read it. I am sorry I waited so long. Beautifully written and an invaluable insight into the Chinese mind. In my opinion it goes a very long way toward explaining the historical distrust between Chinese and Western peoples. Chinese people could not/were trained not to express their thoughts (and in many instances were encouraged to not even have thoughts) and this lack of ability to communicate directly is perceived as untrustworthy by Westerners. I did have to laugh when I read that Chinese told their children to be grateful for their food as children in the capitalist West were starving! (Being of an age where when I said "yuck" I was told children in China were starving and I should be glad I wasn't.) But many did starve and many more were ... Read More
