I question Oprah's literary tastes. She gushed over "Pillars," saying she was sad as she neared its conclusion, knowing the read would soon be over. Please! The story wasn't particularly compelling, the characters not that well developed, and Follett's story--taking about 996 pages-- was about 600 pages too long.

I read another reviewer's comments here in which he said the first 400 or so pages were disappointing but he was happy with the ending, I felt just the opposite. I loved the first part of this book, for it exhibited a new, more mature Stephen King (which, given the injuries to the main character) I attributed to his own terrible accident. But, all that new maturity was tossed away for what is ultimately a Kingish pat (squishy, icky stuff) ending. Just how many novels has King written in which a group of (pick one, old friends, new friends, lovers, etc.) end up going to a dark place to fight a (pick one, giant spider, vampire, ghost, etc.) The first 400 or so pages of "Duma Key" is among the best King has ever written. I only wish he could have come up with an ending which was at that level ... Read More

I am an avid reader, and have read many, many books. I purchased this book to read because I love the music and the play. I did not read this book because it held my attention (because it did not do so- ), But rather, I read it because I was curious to know the biographies and backgrounds of the characters mentioned in the musical. It did provide me with the information I desired, but I had to sift through a lot of "sludge" to get it. This book should be rated "R". It's descriptive talk of the various sex scenes is disgusting. It details sexual positions, orgasms, lust, cheating, adultery, and other steamy subjects. Though the book as a whole is not like that, there are several chapters that are just written pornography. I don't recommend this book to anyone; especially minors. But, even ... Read More

I have read dozens of young adult, urban fantasy, fiction, etc novels about vampires. Yes all of them seem similar, all of them may have semi-predictable outcomes after reading so many for so many years, but Marked is one of the books I had high hopes for, only to be disappointed. There's plot, action, originality, but to be totally honest the writing style did not do it justice. I felt like i've read fanfictions that were more engaging, this just seemed to combine pure chick lit with vampirism. Decent for a start, but out of all the books my sister has let me borrow, this is the only one I haven't read, and one of the only books I tell people to think twice about reading.

This book turned out to be one of my favorites of the stackhouse series. There is action x2 so it really gives you alot to read. You really just want to kick Bill in the butt but I will not spoil it but is a must read..
Lots of things come into play with this book and things are making more sense.

6.Atlas Shrugged by: Ayn Rand

For those who have never read Ayn Rand, this is a rather meaty way to get her philosophy in a work of fiction.
No, she isn't going down in history as one of the literary "greats", but her views on what makes the world work have inspired many of the greatest inovators of our generation and will probably be a lasting legacy for her.
This book is well worth reading if you truly believe in the value of objectivism. If you don't believe then it is well worth reading to find out why others so strongly defend Rand.

I was so excited to see this new novel by James Patterson. He is one of the rare authors whose books I buy without question. His books that are written with other authors are usually not very well written. It's almost as if he just gives them the plot and allow the other authors to run rampant with the story. When I saw this book, an Alex Cross book at that, I was hooked. It is a true page turner. The short chapters will have you saying to yourself, late into the night....I'll stop at the next chapter. Then....I'll stop at the next chapter, etc. Before you know it, your done and ready for the next installation. Great book, great storyline, loveable characters and nail biting suspense.

I truly enjoyed Gregory Maguire's "Wicked" and I was thrilled to find out that he had continued on the story of Oz. Son of a Witch was even more exciting to me, because I felt like the action had been tripled, the suspense intensified, and you honestly felt an attachment to the people of Oz.

Some people think it is crazy to get caught up in a fantasy world, but it is hard not to when you read stories like this one. Oz isn't just some fanciful world of lollipop guild children and dancing scarecrows that you remember. Gregory Maguire created a very real, very dark, very honest world that reflects the world that we live in today...

The story is better and faster paced than his second book (DaVinci), plus better locals. Front to back one of the best books I have ever read.
