The book is interesting, with some enlightening stories and amusing anecdotes.

However, I take exception Mr. Gladwell's touting of the small-changes-can-lead-to-big-consequences 'butterfly effect' philosophy as if it were his own. Either he is not very well versed in the world of chaos mathematics (which would be disappointing, scientifically), or he is not giving due deference to all those who came before him in developing New Math. I'm not sure which scenario is more disturbing, but the book has the feel of being disconnected from reality, due to his disregarding of those who established the field.

From what I have read of negative reviews here- most people who don't like the book don't like it because they disagree with it. The idea itself is quite controversial, and I'm not sure I fully agree with Gladwell, but the manner in which he presents it is entertaining and enjoyable to read. His anecdotes do show some examples where "thin slicing" can come quite in handy, but he doesn't say this should overrule thought out processes- his point is that sometimes we can "thin slice" and be right, when overanalyzing leads to the wrong conclusion.
The book is very well written and great for anyone who likes to have something to talk about. I also recommend this book to anyone who likes the book "Freakonomics" because Gladwell uses a similar anecdotal writing stye to Levitt and Dubner.

Very good book. I'd say it's a message everyone can grab hold of because it gives you something concrete to focus on. I'd compare it to the way bio-feedback works.

This book is a good way to occupy your time.

I am always looking for ways to be more productive. Being left-handed I became interested in this book when I saw the sub-title "Why Right-Brainers Will Rule The World". I thought: "finally, my day has come!".

What I found was not quite a "recipe book" for success but rather a new and different way to look at the world.

The book is replete with references to resource materials (many of which are found on the Internet free of cost). Now on my second reading I am taking the time to visit these resources to take my understanding of my fledgling new skill set to a deeper level.

When I really like a book I buy extras to give to friends. Of the five extras that I bought I have given them to; a school superintendent, a financial services businessman, a nurse nearing retirement, ... Read More

Predictably Irrational is one book that satisfies so many audiences that it is simply amazing, and it does an awesome job at that. Without delving into the research that Dan Ariely and his group of eminent researchers/friends have carried out - that would take away the fun of discovering some of the insights presented in the book - I must say that the book had great appeal for me as a business-person, as a family man & parent and as a person living in society at large. It has some very important implications for people working in government who are responsible for policy-making and for individuals who wish to avoid making mistakes they could've been making repeatedly. In all honesty, my behaviour has changed in some measure after reading this book and I think the results that I can monitor in the short-term, ... Read More

In this book Jared Diamond attempts to answer a question put to him by his New Guinean friend, "Why is it that you whit people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people has little cargo of our own?"

In New Guineas `cargo' is the term used to refer to goods, such as metal, guns, mirrors, axes, matches, clothing etc. The question is basically, `What factors led to one land having more technology advancement while another did not.

IQ tests have been shown to be culturally based. Decades of tests trying to prove an intelligence difference between races have failed.

If intelligence is not a factor is there another factor.

The answer that Jared Diamond provides is simple and easily observed.

It's the environment that encourages the developments ... Read More
