I knew relatively little going into this book...and what little I did know was from less than 100% accurate retellings such as in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or references from cheesy shows or horror flicks (I think perhaps there was a reference in Scooby Doo somewhere?). I had the basic gist...there's a guy, Dorian Gray, who has some magical painting that ages while he stays young and wonderful forever. Not much to go on, but I was still excited to read it. I was pleasantly surprised that the book had much more depth to it.

Plot
The plot is intriguing and has been used in other stories, though I think this one has more depth than I've seen before. Essentially, Dorian makes a wish that he will be forever as pristine as the painting made of him and that instead ... Read More

We all think of the Orcs as mindless beast... well this book gives us insight into how the Shamanistic Orcs got to be the Horde. As a WoW player that has never liked the Horde, this book inspired me to roll an Orc Shaman. Also it tells where the Draenei came from...

I loved it so much I sent my sister a copy!

I've admired Tufte's work since he first published "visual display..." so I leapt on this when it appeared and purchased 17 copies for colleagues at work. They liked and agreed with it, but dismissed it as impractical advice!

I find I agree with almost all his points about PowerPoint's dumbing down of information, but then sat back an thought about the message and the medium. Powerpoint is a tool for presentations - it focuses the audience, keeps the presenter on track and provides handy reminders. It's not intended to be a high information content medium.

However the abuse of powerpoint comes in its use a a non-presentation way to distribute information. So often a person who misses the presentation asks for the slides as an alternative to being there. Now Tufte comes into his own and ... Read More

Day of the Dragon is the first of the Warcraft novel series, and does it well overall. The book is not without its flaws, but is well done for the most part.

The main drawback of the novel is its pacing. Things pick up towards the climax at the end for instance, but until that point, things generally proceed at a steady pace, punctuated by bits of action. Granted, action isn't a necessity in a novel, and it's one of the book's strengths that the narrative is the primary means of sustaining the story. However, if you ARE a sucker for action, you'll have to be patient.

The characters are generally split down the middle. Ironically, it's the characters who are far removed from being human that are interesting as opposed to the humanoid's themselves. To clarify, the dragons that we're introduced ... Read More

I didn't out and out hate it, and it did shed some light on various events, however I most definatly agree with other people on here that it is by FAR the worst written Warcraft book. Its worth it (to me) if you are a big fan of Warcraft, or simply looking for soemthing different to pass the time, but the book feels like it has less depth then a sheet of the paper it is printed on. Get it to fill out your colletion, read it once, then shelve it permanatly.
