One of my first-grade students pointed out the truth to me: this story does not stay "on the trail", so to speak, of keeping with a connected story. (Ironically, this fit very well with a lesson). And yet there is something incredibly fun about the random creatures trotting themselves out in all their quirky Suessian glory. So no, there is no logical plot, but we get fun pictures and dazzling rhymes that we love.

I bought this book for my 2-year-old son and he loves it. He is into trucks and cars and wouldn't put this down. He now knows about all kinds of trucks. There isn't much of a story. He just likes looking at and saying all of the different trucks (such as a flatbed trailer).

We all know this book, no need for me to re-iterate the plot. What makes it work, though, is that Dr. Seuss understood the importance of breaking the rules - something many of his imitators never grasp. He didn't stick to a rhyme scheme or a meter all the time, he varied it and dropped it when needed. That makes his books readable instead of mind-numbing - even when you're reading them for the 1000th time straight :)

This book is very small. That makes it nice to carry around, but hard to see the little drawings on the pages. Our 15 month old daughter doesn't understand all the crazy cars (pickle car, toothpaste car, etc.), we have a good time reading it occasionally. If you're interested in a Richard Scary book, I would recommend a larger book with more going on on each page. My nephew has a huge one that he loves to stare at.

Oh, the Places You'll Go! is a very good graduation gift, and my traditional gift for such occasions. But in regular bookstores, the cost usually averages at $18. Now, used books are great ideas, usually about $5, but not for graduation gifts. So when these $12 per arrived in perfect NEW condition I was thrilled. Go Amazon.

I have to say, I don't enjoy reading this book. I see in the reviews that there is a longer version, and I think I might like that more. This one just gets on my nerves. My son seems to really enjoy it, though.

Times have changed. Little kids left home alone and shouldn't they have been told by their parents not to let anyone in? This is the book that must of led to a lot of wild house parties and may have spawned many party while your parents are away flicks (Risky Business, etc). A good fun read with a lilting cadence!

I bought this for my 4 year old and she absolutely loves it! It is really great for kids who have a million questions about how things work and it does a phenomenal job of explaining a typical process (e.g., building a house) from end to end (including laying sewage and water pipes underneath the ground). It gives the details that curious kids really want to know in a fun, darling way.
