Okay, first let me say that this is an okay book only for those who are not an artist or just starting. I had this as a text book(drawing course for graphic design major in a small tech/bus school), and being I've been drawing since I could hold a writing utensil I found it slightly insulting, especially being in a graphic design course. It's really only for the untalented, along yes, I did get something from it the grids...but that's it.

3.V for Vendetta by: Alan Moore

Books : V for Vendetta
It's been mentioned before, but the quality of the printing for this book is pretty poor. Honestly, I wouldn't have even minded the poor paper quality if the book side had simply been increased by about 2 inches on either side, but as is, things are pretty cramped and a lot of the detail is lost. So if you're picky, be warned.

If you've seen the movie, then you know what to expect here. There are some small changes, but for the most part, the book and the movie are pretty much parallel. I'm sure you've heard that Moore whined about the movie, and I was expecting to see a lot more differences, but no. The tone is really the same, the plot is the same, Moore was being silly.

I'd say this is take or leave if you've seen the movie. But if you liked the movie and ... Read More

4.Design of Everyday Things by: Donald A. Norman

Books : Design of Everyday Things
So often "design" books seem to go on about looks and "feel" yet only brush over the physiology of design. This book shows you how to think like a user, explorer like a user, error like a user and design for helping the user love your product.

Anyone reading this book will instantly appreciate truly good design over the average mud we currently live in.

This is one of only a few type books that I have read and was one of the most enjoyable. The concepts of typography are presented in an easy to follow flow and language that anyone can understand while not 'dumbing down' typography to a point that designers won't enjoy the book.

Okay, this is seriously one of the most brilliant books I have ever read, and I have Henry (who is also brilliant) to thank for introducing this to me. (Thank you, Henry.) Although this book has been around since '93, I suspect it's nowhere near as recognized as it deserves to be, but with time that will change, I hope.

The full title is "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art," and what Scott McCloud does is explain what we take almost completely for granted, not just about comics, which he convincingly raises to a fine art, but also about the way we 'see,' and think we see, the world around us, especially as it is represented in words and images.

It's an important book because he talks in deceptively simple terms about how we perceive reality. McCloud shows the reader, ... Read More

7.The Complete Maus by: Art Spiegelman

Books : The Complete Maus
I went to a exhibition on the history of comics a couple of years ago. They had all kinds, from Little Nemo to Jack Kirby, and many things in between. One of the things featured was several pages from Art Speigelman's Maus. I was so intrigued by what I saw that I had to buy it off Amazon, and I have not regretted it. Don't be fooled by Speigelman's seemingly simplistic black and white work. His storytelling is powerful stuff, I tell you.

8.Wuthering Heights (Classics Illustrated) by: Emily Bronte

Books : Wuthering Heights (Classics Illustrated)
A mysterious work of doomed romance, depressing landscapes, and Gothic moods. How can this possibly NOT work?

The story immediately draws you in with a nameless traveler who finds himself needing a place to stay. Here he enters a house of definite spookiness and becomes wrapped up in the incredible story of its history.

This is not a happy book, but it's intriguing, exciting, and darkly romantic. It's about people who want to be together despite all-powerful fate. It's about a romance that transcends generations, destiny, and individuals looking for their own way with a breath-taking Beauty and the Beast theme.

Very few of the characters are likeable. In fact, I can't think of a single person I really liked. But they are powerful and you just can't help but root for them. ... Read More
