I would definitely vote this book as an award winner (it gets really good after the first half -- especially towards the last third of the book). Greg Mortenson definitely needs to win the Nobel Peace Prize! A definite must-read for our times.

I think I'm in love with Danica McKellar. As I type, my 13 year old is not only reading a book (something she is loathe to do), but it is a MATH book and she's giggling and saying "OH! Well, that makes sense!" 7th grade math was HORRIBLE. Absolutely horrible with a horrible teacher. By the time school starts in 3 weeks, my daughter will be through "Math Doesn't Suck" AND "Kiss My Math". She will be CONFIDENT she can tackle 8th grade math. Her confidence has already been boosted. Where was Danica when I was in middle school? Oh. Right. I don't think she had been born yet! I am simply amazed at how my daughter is absorbed with Danica's lessons.

While the Wongs have created a well-written, nicely-detailed and generally-helpful how-to for teachers, especially new ones, the book also can be maddeningly frustrating as well. The book, as other critics have noted, is focused on the elementary school teacher, not the middle/junior or high school teacher. Some of the strategies and techniques do, indeed, work at the upper levels. For example, all teachers, regardless of grade level, need to use a seating chart, an attention-getting signal and a daily "do-now" exercise. And the Wongs outline these ideas effectively. But the Wongs have, unfortunately, based many of their ideas on the assumption that a teacher has his or her own room, to do with as he or she pleases. Can't believe there are so many typos and mathematical mistakes in this OFFICIAL guide. If you have a weak mathematics background, you will be definitely confused or misled.

This book is well written and provides a great guide to setting up a functioning literacy program in the classroom while empowering students to work independently. I can't wait to use it in my classroom.

I used this book for my tenth grade geometry class. At first glance it seems to have helpful examples and explanations, but the author actually only explains a few of the postulates and theorems. Many explanations towards the end of the book are very short or just not given as if the author grew lazy. It has plenty of practice problems, but little to no preparation for them. It was a blessing that i had the internet to help me otherwise i never would have passed. Hope that your teacher knows the course thoroughly, or else this class will be a nightmare for you.

This book is really useful and the language is really simple. Tips are useful and exercises at the end of the chapter help develop confidence.

This book gives valuable detail to ensure that your school year gets off to a great start. It covers songs, games, rules and procedures to be used during the first six weeks of school. It is the best of many books I've read. I highly recommend this one!

The primary reason I bought this guide over the others was for the computer adaptive practice tests included on the cd-rom. On my first practice GMAT, I found that a few of the explanations of the math problems used information not presented in the questions. On my second practice GMAT, I found that it was recycling questions from the first practice exam. On the verbal section it gave me too many reading passages. On the math section I kept getting hard questions, depite a streak of several wrong answers. I also found the editing in the math section to be very sloppy, and thus confusing to read.
