This is a book that should be read by everyone. It is not only fascinating with the twists and turns of events that shaped each state, but teaches so much about our history as a growing nation. For me it is especially delightful since no one who was involved those many years ago could have imagined what those shapes would represent in the book The Little Man In the Map: With Clues To Remember All 50 States See how those shapes created by a myriad of forces have now become the simple clues to remember the name, shape and location of the states.

That being said, no Disney vacation is perfect either, although we all seek perfection from this expensive theme park trip! What the Unofficial Guide does is break down, in a very user friendly way, how to understand a Disney vacation and make the most of it. A Walk in the Woods On a recent trip to my local bookstore, the cover of this bright green paperback caught my attention. Or maybe it was the bear peering out at me. I'm not sure. I'm a frequent hiker myself, and have always dreamed of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, so reading the description for this book immediately peaked my interest. I was not disappointed. With the book, that is. It was everything the back reviews said it would be--Bryson finds comic wit to expend on every situation. His hiking partner, Katz, had some one-liners that made me laugh out loud, if not cringe a bit at their social meanness. This guide book is full of detailed, and unbiased reviews of restaurants, activities and sight seeing spots. Also, there is plenty of information about places that are off the beaten track. Very helpful.

Have traveled many times to Maui, and thought we knew all the hot spots. After thumbing through this guide, we decided to try Nakalele Blowhole on the North shore. This location is not on the map, and no signs will direct you there. One tip - unless you are into intense, no- or little-trail hiking, take the second route identified in the book. Awesome site, with little tourist traffic. We had been 200 yards from this spot before and never noticed it. This is just one example of the type of information you will get from Doughty in this book. He uses mile markers to guide you to the precise points to turn off. His descriptions are direct and objective. He also includes insights on local lore and enough history to help you appreciate the context of the sites, without bogging down the guide.

New Mexico, South Carolina, Montana, Vermont, New York, Virginia, and Maine are some of the places I have lived that are well covered and reasonably represented in this guide (with the East certainly receiving more attention than the West). Although anyone can name worthwhile places not included, or argue about the appropriateness of some of the places that are included, overall, the balance of well-known attractions and lesser-known gems is a good one. There seem to be fewer expensive hotels featured in this book than in the world-wide volume, but emphasis on restaurants is stronger--not a bad thing for those of us who consider culinary treats an important part of travel and culture. My son has been raving about Bill Bryson's for some time now, but I was not sure that they would appeal to me. After hearing others rave about his memoir: The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, I thought this might be a fun audio book. I am sorry I waited so long to try Bryson's work. This memoir was terrific. It leaves you with a feeling of appreciation for the simple things in life. Bill Bryson and I were born a year apart, and as baby boomers growing up in the 50's and 60's, I found this memoir to be a trip down memory lane. He talks about his mom's bad cooking, his strange relatives, going to the store for penny candy (candy cigarettes), playing outdoors until dark, first crushes, Saturday at the movies, loss of innocence etc. He could be describing a whole lot of baby boomers in this ... This book left me feeling very sad, and my heart aches for his family. Many young people do foolish things like Alex did. Some survive (like the author), and some don't. I enjoyed the insight the author provided through his research. I thought he did a good job collecting information from people who had crossed paths with Alex. I still don't understand what compelled him to such an extreme lifestyle.

This book is amazing. There are many Disney guides out there and this one has all the info from all the others combined. Yes, it is a huge book and it does not have pictures. There are other books for pictures. This book is jam packed with all the info necessary from the beginning stages of planning your trip to every aspect imaginable at Disney World. I used this book to plan a 10 day trip to Disney World staying at a Disney World resort. Their reviews of all the resorts, parks and restaurants are lengthy, informative and all right on. I was able to choose the restaurants I wanted to dine at by their indepth reviews and charts. For Disney I always use two books. The best aspect of The House on First Street: My New Orleans Story is that Julia Reed gives a realistic portrayal of how enjoyable, if not eccentric, life was in New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina. Her truly Southern voice comes clearly through in her writing, especially when she describes the food and entertainment she and her acquaintances partake of with much enthusiasm. The story does leave you with sadness and yearning for what once was and may never be again...and that's from someone who has never visited New Orleans.
