I was compelled by the genre that this book purported to fall into coupled with the fact that it won the Pulitzer Prize. I because of the later, I wasn't expecting "The Road Warrior" or anything, but what I was expecting was something of worth. That's most definitely not what I got.

The entire narrative left me with a handful of words consistently popping to mind, in no particular order: grey, okay, ash, cart, cold, starving. There are more, but they are equally as dreary.

Much of this "story" is a bleak road picture following a man and a boy south to get warmer after some cataclysm of global proportions wipes out most life. The main problem is that there are inconsistencies in the narrative, and with no plot (which is fine) and with what seems to be a choice not to ... Read More

For those who have never read Ayn Rand, this is a rather meaty way to get her philosophy in a work of fiction.
No, she isn't going down in history as one of the literary "greats", but her views on what makes the world work have inspired many of the greatest inovators of our generation and will probably be a lasting legacy for her.
This book is well worth reading if you truly believe in the value of objectivism. If you don't believe then it is well worth reading to find out why others so strongly defend Rand.

I have read each of the Halo novels prior to this one, and although I appreciate Buckell's efforts to carry on the Halo legend, I must say that this particular work somewhat disappointed me. Granted, when "The Powers that Be" decided to let not one, not two, not three, but FOUR authors pen the Halo series, they were asking for trouble. I digress; I suppose the greatest disappointment with the book was the lack of detail. Or perhaps it was the complete departure from the style of the other books. Or maybe it was the sullying of the Spartans' good names by breathing life into three "Spartans" that were utterly dissimilar from everything instilled in the readers' minds about Spartans in the other novels. It could have been the fact that although a plethora of characters were introduced, Buckell made no ... Read More

While I have always shown a fondness for zombie films and books - 28 Days Later is truly epic - and I plan on writing my own in due time (check back around Book 5), Max Brooks took this title to another level following the success of his Zombie Survival Guide. Following the conclusion of the Zombie War, the piece follows like a well-edited war documentary: the narrator interviews survivors from a multitude of locations to draw the reader into a deeper understanding of the horrors within a zombie world. Rather than employing a passive narration, it is the unique voice of each character that pushes this title to new levels, leaving the darkest sections vague and obscure like any person accustomed to war would keep them.

There is such depth, though, to his imagination that it is almost staggering ... Read More

Over the past few years, James Patterson has done yeoman's work on a number of fronts to encourage young adults to read, namely with his Maximum Ride novels. He and co-author Michael Ledwidge have just published a new series, one that will appeal to fans of science fiction and that has just enough action --- and charm --- to appeal to teens and those who still wish they were. The lead-off book is THE DANGEROUS DAYS OF DANIEL X, and it's a good one.

It kicks off, appropriately enough, with Daniel X's backstory, or at least some of it. Daniel is a 15-year-old alien from outer space whose purpose-driven life is dedicated to eradicating monstrous beings from other planets, called Hunters, who see Earth as a candy dish ripe for the plucking. Daniel's parents were murdered, apparently by The Prayer, ... Read More

oh well, another newly written Star Wars book that is OBVIOUSLY written to support the gaming community. Wizards of the Coast does it better with their StarDrive novels (although, they haven't published one in years....)

LOTF was SO bad, i stopped reading them after book 5, i just read synopsis's on wikipedia. and i absolutely HATED the Dark Nest trilogy - so stupid. Millenium Falcon is not so good; it would have been better as a Dark Horse comic book, or it should be listed as a book for teens as it's too simplistic for adult readers.

i don't hold out much hope for the new Fate of the Jedi arc. it's also interesting that Karen Traviss dropped out as an author for the new arc, and the new author,
Chrisie Golden is a gaming author. i see where the future of Star Wars novels ... Read More

i'm 68, still a kid...and a book lover. james patterson has written some wonderful mysteries for adults, but this series is for imaginative young folks who can see these characters in their adventures. it's a fun romp through lots of fantasy events in real places and can stand alone, but you'll want to read the first 2 books just because it's a great tale.

This book is not bad. Overall, for me, the Horus series has been a little slow. But, on the other hand, it has filled in a LOT of gaps in my knowledge of Warhammer, and I especially like the information that we are given pertaining to the beginnings of various ideas and institutions. For example, I was really touched by the decision made by the Alpha legion to side with Horus because a victory by Horus would minimize humanity's suffering in the long term.

I have also liked, although it has been a little hard to follow, how some of the stories have overlapped, and how various characters have responded to what they have learned and have then had to face intersting decisions when meeting other potential allies.

In regard to this book, I again liked learning about Mars and the Mechanicum ... Read More

This book was really fun to read. I could not put it down. The action draws you into the story so much that you cannot wait to find out what happens next. Obviously Bourne is not a very experienced writer, but there are only a few awkward sentences that stick out. I do appreciate, however, that he directed the story toward adult readers. Read this book if you are a fan of the Zombie genre.
