1.2666 (Narrativas Hispanicas) by: Roberto Bolano

Books : 2666 (Narrativas Hispanicas)
Deeply rich with points and counterpoints, side stories, main stories, and a host of ways to explore this 900 page book the reader can often get lost thinking about the counterpoints that they are reading. This is not a typical book, there are no happy endings here, nothing gets tidied up, and few things get resolved. What the book does provide though is a rich context, nearly luxurious in its writing, it is like slipping into an alternative universe where we are both better than we really are and stranger than we really are.

The book is written in first person, we learn the story from the view point of being told what the points in the story are. You don't have to think about what is being said, rather you starting thinking what you would do in a similar situation, how you would ... Read More

Books : Great Crash 1929, the (Penguin business)
First published in 1954, this book is understandably piquing interest because of the current financial issues facing the United States and world. The causes of the 1929 crash do seem similar in many ways to the current issues of today in 2008. However, many circumstances are similar, as many are different.

But also similar, there seems to be a rule about the phenomenon of Karma in individual human behavior. And this rule of Karma seems to apply to investing behavior.

Author John Galbraith provides evidence for his argument that cheap and easy credit wasn't the major reason for the bubble-like conditions that led to the crash, but that the real factor was "speculation for the sake of speculating." Speculation for the sake of speculation caused prices to artificially rise ... Read More

Brilliantly conceived and masterfully woven. The research Brown performed to make it all come together was truly impressive. This is the best book I've read this year since NAKED BRUNETTE.

"Eldest," second in the "Inheritance Cycle," is nothing more than a glorified clone of the excellent author J.R.R. Tolkien, who actually wrote well for a change. Christopher Paolini is NOT a good author and he writes demonic books that seem okay on the outside but are dark with evil on the inside. Satan uses books like these to corrupt people, and especially children, and we should be wise enough to stay away from evil fare such as this. Beware--this book will bring harm to whoever reads it! Maybe not in ways you can tell, but certainly in eternal ways!

Books : The Catcher in the Rye
First off, I don't understand why there's so much hate around this novel. I'd say it's one of the best pieces of American literature I have ever read. The reader's brief journey through Holden's transition from the innocent over to the "perverted" adult world. From Holden's encounter with the water-spitting perverts to Holden's date with Sally in New York, the Catcher in the Rye is a great example of what the teenage years are like. This excellent novel is one that I truly related to, being a teenager experiencing some of the same feelings that Holden feels. While I don't know what it feels like to lose a loved one like Holden does, I understand how he feels about sexuality and that struggle to maintain what is innocent in the world, and I even could experience some of what it would feel like to lose a loved one ... 6.Into the Wild by: Jon Krakauer

Books : Into the Wild
This is not normally the type of book I read, but I am so glad I did. It's moving, and amazing. The story being recounted is quite interesting. (Later I saw the movie which seems very true to the novel, but is far more boring and slow moving than the novel- although the casting seems perfect.) Kraukauer is a beautiful story teller and lets you see the full character (smart but stupid, selfish but loving) boy who only wants to "walk into the wild" You can tell he loves him, but also wants to tell the truth. He is sensitive to those left behind and wants to depict Supertramp's final adventure as he might want it told himself. The book is interesting, and will make you sad, angry, and annoyed. It will remind you of the differences in humans, and how some people can be lost even unto themselves. The book pieces together fragments ... Read More

Books : Slaughterhouse- Five. Or The Children's Crusade. (Lernmaterialien)
Somewhere in the first chapter (or maybe the second, if you are convinced that the first chapter is a foreword), it dawns on you: this is not normal. The main character is not dynamic. There is no real, driving conflict. There is no escalation, nor any other conventional literary mechanism used to move the story. That would probably be the best word to describe Vonnegut: anticonventional.

What follows is a masterful tale the likes of which we may never see again. The sublime tones combine with a graceful, immersive imagery and characters that are bare and gaunt while also full of fervor. The themes are beautiful and horrible to watch, but Billy Pilgrim's journey is one you won't be able to avoid. It'll call to you whenever this book is not in your hands. At any given moment, you'll find yourself murmuring to no one ... Read More

The Margin
I have to say Gatsby, by Fitzgerald was another classic disappointment. Like Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, both drew world-wide acclaim, but for me neither went anywhere. That is to say there was an absence of substance. Another tale by a sad author about pathetic rich folk in the 1920's. I suppose the story is worth reading just to lay claim to that fact, for boasting purposes. It is short and from time to time there is a smidgeon, contrary to what I said earlier, of depth.

I had heard such great things about this book, so was really looking forward to reading it. I read to chapter 22, then quit. I thought it was extremely boring and very slow moving. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the author's situation and the subsequent discovery of her manuscript was so intriguing, I expected the book to be the same, but I was very disappointed.
