Books : The motorcycle diaries: A journey around South America
Very good book to read to learn what goes on in the head on Che. He shares his emotions and passion for life and everything that comes along with it. This book is based more on his personal opinions, likes and dislikes. You would get the opportunity to get in his head and read his thoughts. A little too complicated to read. Its not like reading a chapter after a chapter in a book. Each memoir is his personal diary entry and not based on a day to day basis. Also contains black and white pictures taken either by him or his traveling along friend.

What i did not like about this book was the fact that the pages jumped around. One minute i was reading on pg33 and next minute i was on pg54 or so. It was really annoying because i had to constantly skip around and look for the ... Read More

Basically the layout and info is good, though some important stuff was outdated,ie current location of the terminal terrestre (bus station) in Quito (This created some testy, but fun conversation with the taxi driver). One thing to beware of---the map symbols and numbers are miniscule. Granted, I am 50 andy eyesight isn't what it used to be. But if there is any one most important info in a travel guide,it's the maps. Grow it please.
Nice size overall for lightwgt travel.
Narratives on history and background just right.

Of all the travel books I've read over the years, this is the one I always come back to. It's an extraordinary work: a brilliant mix of journey, revelation, history, people of another land, another time. I marvel at Chatwin's gift of language, his insights into the ways and means of how the people in this ancient land of South America live, and have lived for centuries. There's a kind of authenticity to the storytelling techniques that Chatwin employs: it makes everything personal, almost private. And as a reader, you're drawn into his world, his engagement with the locals, with their roots and the richness of their history. The book is, quite simply, a masterpiece.

I used the 1998 edition for a three month trip in 2005. I went on long treks near Ushuaia, PN Los Glaciares near El Calafate, PN Torres del Paine, PN Nahuel Huapi near Bariloche, PN Chiloe, and PN Villarica.
Sometimes I found it difficult to interpret the directions until after the fact, however, the information was almost always correct. Not bad considering that the book was already several years old.
Planning out several months of travelling in advance and buying maps in Santiago and Buenoes Aires is impractical. The maps in the book were often the only navigation tool available and were suitable.
The pictures are beautiful.
If your Spanish isn't very good you will find this book is indispensible. (I had just enough to get on the right bus)I would strongly recommend this book to ... Read More

Product as advertised. Information good but based on 2004 data, not really current information for planned travel in 2008. This is the problem with printed reviews versus online data.

6.Tristes tropiques by: Claude Levi-Strauss

I like to travel and to observe the cities, landscapes, the plants and animals and the human inhabitants of the countries I go to. So does Levy-Strauss, and he is a fantastic observer, much more sharp-eyed than I could ever hope to be, and a highly entertaining writer. In this classic he talks about a wide range of observations from a number of corners of the world, but mainly about South America.
The book deals with Levi-Strauss' time as a teacher in Brazil and his trips into the South American hinterland; his escape from Nazi-occupied France; His later expeditions to visit remote tribes in the Amazon; and an assortment of observations about such diverse topics as the frustration of the traveler to never encounter the true, pristine state of a culture, the Indian caste system and the division of public ... This is an interesting travel book to read about Edmond O'Hanlon journey into the Amazon. Edmond manages to sucker a friend of his to come along on his crazy journey into the Amazon. His friend has no idea what he is getting himself into. It is an easy to read book with lots of English humour in it. Many time I found myself laughing. If you like travel books with adventure then this is a good read.

Books : Uttermost part of the earth

This a a most excellent book that can be compared to nothing else. When I read Lucas Bridges's story about his early life in Tierra Fuego he gave me a part of history that I otherwise couldn't have made my own. I was especially touched by the way he introduced me to the Indians of Tierra Fuego. He knew many of them as individuals and thus could make me acquainted with them as well. Since then I have had the priviledge to visit Tierra Fuego and also to meet some of the aboriginees of the land.

So - anybody who is the least interested in Tierra Fuego should make sure to get hold of the Uttermost Part of the World.

I enjoyed this book & felt I learned a lot about the heart of South America - mainly Peru, Columbia & Brazil. If you are into white-water sports then there is no doubt this is a 5 star book. I enjoyed it but to me it was a good 4 star book. I found the first half of the book dragged a little more, it was more about getting the expedition started, some bickering amongst team members & making slow progress in the incredibly dangerous terrain of Peru.

In the second half of the book the core team remains & the story does a better job of explaining the countryside (riverside) & the interesting people they meet along the way. Joe & his partner's earned their fame on this adventure - 6 months of abusing yourself physically & mentally. One thing Joe Kane does a little better than most is takes ... Read More
