You CAN let your kids read it TOO! I'm an engineer and this book is full of stuff I now use at work - really. My eight year old doesn't have the attention span to get through a section, YET.

A book, for children and adults, shows us how a Roman city was built, from the ground up. First they make a plan, deciding on how many people will live in the city, where the forums will go, the roads, the walls, the markets, theater, amphitheater and temples. They bring the stone to make the walls and aqueducts. We see how people live in the city, as the book explores the homes, businesses, public spaces and sewer system. We get to see the final, complete, form of the city, full of busy streets, crowded markets, happy homes and tall walls.

Books : Where Does the Garbage Go? (Let's read-and-find-out science books)
My 8 year old read this book to me for health. We are learning about waste and pollution. This book includes at dumps, landfills, ocean dumping, incineration, recycling, the end uses, and reducing our garbage to begin with. A very good book that I would recommend for grades 1-3rd. It would also make a good book for social studies.

My almost 5 year old son is learning to read rapidly, but there are so few books which he enjoys AND can read well. He was highly motivated to read Wheels, as he adores vehicles of all kinds. The format is very simple (1-2 short sentences per page)and includes plenty of long and short vowel words, as well as "oo" sounds and "igh" sounds. Hardly any words with 2 syllables.

Books : Recycle!: A Handbook for Kids
This book is full of facts and figures to demonstrate just how damaging some of the products we use every day can be to our environment. The information regarding the biodegradability of every day products will really make a person think about what they use and how they dispose of it.

This is not a biography, per se. The "Childhood of Famous Americans" books are a series of fictionalized accounts of the youth of famous Americans. The conversations and (some) scenarios may be made up, to show the character formation of the famous person. The places and names of people are biographical; some of the situations are probably not.

Having said that... we like this series very well.

And wow, we have enjoyed Thomas Edison! The book emphasizes values like responsibility, curiosity, and hard work. Some of the stories made us laugh, and they all made us even more interested to find out what would happen next. Our kids were the most excited about Thomas's laboratory in the basement, and in his job on the train.

I read this to my 6-year-old, and we were both mesmerized. The story is told exceptionally well. First there is some "action," then some history, then more action. Practical details about rockets and space travel will fascinate kids and adults alike. And after reading this book, no one will forget the meaning of the words, "The Eagle has landed" and "That's one small step...." It sounds silly, but I actually got choked up at the climax (moon landing).
This is a great book for any kid interested in the original development of the space program, up to the first walk on the moon. I can't make a pronouncement about the reading level (maybe third grade?), but you could read it to a 5-year-old, and I think even most adults would like this book. I'm going to be looking for other books by this author.
