While this book is somewhat entertaining to flip through, the new style of generic artwork and animation ruins the experience. Gone are the old type illustrations and artwork of these characters from the original artists of the 60's, 70's, 80's and even 90's. They have all been replaced by crappy updated "ultimate" style animations and CHEESY artwork that really is sub-standard in appearance. Most of these characters drawings are very simplistic in their quality and presentation. It is very difficult for old Marvel fans like me to tolerate these low quality renditions. Just not acceptable. Skip it unless you must have it.

Books : Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, The (Barrons Book Notes)
I love "The Hobbit" and "LOTR" series of books they are really fantastic works of fantasy-literature. I do own both "The Hobbit" and "LOTR" books and they are one of my many top favourite bookseries ever to be penned. I am glad I got a different edition of the books that stay together, have good drawings of Middle-Earth, and have the sentences worded correctly.

I looked at versions of these books seperately in the store and thought WOW! what a generic version trying to pass on us avid readers and "LOTR" fans. I would suggest buying the Houghin Mifflin versions of "The Hobbit" and all three volumes of "The Lord Of The Rings". To the reviewer's who cover came off of "The Hobbit" I am glad you were able to return this boxset and able to get better ... Read More

It was very well written, with imagery so vivid that it was at times disturbing. However, the ending ruined the entire book for me. I had never read anything by Atwood before, and I never will again. What a letdown!

The book arrived promptly via standard shipping. I purchaed this book to replace a much earlier and well-read edition of The Annotated Alice. The dust cover and the book arrived in excellent condition. I am very pleased with the book and Amazon's service. As you may have guessed, I very much like children's literature and find that more often than not, the content is far more interesting to adults.

I loved how detailed and orginal the story was. It's like T.H. White instead of trying to tell the complete story of King Arthur, takes little snippets of the parts he thought were particularly interesting or wonderful and makes them beautiful and rich with life and meaning. His words are full of love and light. The Once and Future King

I bought this edition for my daughter, to help her understand the sources behind her favourite series, and see the connections to the world of myths. She refers to this book and the map from time to time, re-reading it with or without HP books. I think that as an introductory information for young readers this book is good; the map is nice and the comments provide just enough information to make the young readers interested in the subject of myths and wanting to learn more. Adult readers would probably be disappointed and should buy another HP reference book.

I am currently taking a literature course on Harry Potter, it is part of a children's literature minor that I am going for. This book was not required, but I got it in case it was a good supplement - and it is! This book explores roots behind names in their language. It also discusses what the "real" equivalent means to us. For example, how we view dragons (if they were real) versus how they are viewed in the magical world of J.K. Rowling.

An excellent, easy read, quick guide to some of the big mythologies and legends that go into the series - just in case you don't really know much about them!

After finishing book 7, but before rereading all of the HP books, I wanted to read something that was about the HP books, to see what other people had to say.

This book, consisting of 16 essays, is not about the Harry Potter books. Rather, it uses the characters and events in the Harry Potter books to illustrate the philosophical arguments that are studied at University level in Philosophy 101. For the most part, it won't add to you knowledge of Harry Potter, but it will make you glad you don't have to take Philosophy 101 again (or for the first time).

The essay "Magic, Science, and the Ethics of Technology" is an exception to the overall quality of the book. This is an outstanding essay, that focuses on magic in the HP books and its relationship to science and technology. The ... Read More
