Interesting book; valid history of Scottish clan people, politics & activities. Large book; needs a good editing job. Excessive focus on sexual activities.

I really enjoyed the historical aspect of the book - Detroit through most of the 1900's, Turkey and Greece in the early 1900's. I also learned a lot and it made me much more sympathetic to gender issues brought out in the book. Having said that I wish it could have been about 200 pages shorter. I found myself plodding through it at times. I thought the story of the grandparents could have been condensed to about 50 pages but it went on and on and on. I also could have done without some of the detail at the San Francisco peep show. The ick factor at times was just way too high for me.

Kudos to the author on what must have been an incredible amount of research.

The series hould have ended before this volume. It's bloated, repetitive, boring, and self-indulgent, not a cohesive story but a collection of vignettes, often unrelated to the main characters we know and love. A sharp editor should have sliced this huge book in half.

There are so many times whilst reading this book that I just wanted to roll my eyes like no other... but then again, that's part of the charm of this nearly surreal, satirical fairy tale that still manages a heart of gold.

The set-up is that this is an abridged version of a much longer, much more serious novel (not true, but it makes it a lot of fun). We get the "good parts", a wonderfully melodramatic story of piracy, princesses, murder, and the like.

The humor is off-beat, hilarious, and surprisingly sweet. The characters are quirky, vibrant, and always endearing. Even the tongue-in-cheek notes-of-the-"editor" are a must-read.

It's a conspiracy with a great story, and is definitely a modern classic.

In the review section of this item, several people mentioned that the book was long (all books in the Outlander series are long) and tedious. I considered skipping it and going straight to Snow and Ashes. There is an Outlander site and so many people siad "Do not skip. Too much happens". Actually, while there were some places in the book that I thought were overly discriptive and could have been edited, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am so glad I did read it.

Highly technical, but ultimately well worth the purchase price... however, it raises a host of new questions regarding NASA's TRUE purposes behind missions to both the moon and Mars.

Obviously thoroughly researched, this book is quite frankly critical of NASA, and will surely create doubts in the minds of readers concerning the nearly-sacred status of that agency. NOT light reading!!

8.Grendel by: John Gardner
1971-06
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Grendel
I'm disturbed by the amount of people bashing _Grendel_. It's simply an amazing novel. Perhaps those offering sour reviews simply misunderstand the novel--Gardner, from my reading, isn't really attempting a retelling of the _Beowulf_ story. Instead, he's attempting to cast a philosophical statement *against* a philosophical school of thought that was, and still is, gaining ground when Gardner wrote _Grendel_: existentialism and nihilism, which is embraced by the dragon. Gardner just uses the Beowulf story to frame this social commentary. Consider Gardner's philosophical statement: in a time in history when so many were and are embracing the pointlessness of life, Gardner tells us that there is meaning and real in the world around us. Beowulf smashes Grendel into the wall when they finally meet and forces ... Read More

Napoleon has invaded England. Using tactics recommended by his dragon-advisor, and providing dragons with far more rights than those enjoyed by English dragons, Napoleon demoralizes the English army, outmarches and outfights them, and forces them to flee to Scotland. Meanwhile, one of England's top officers has been condemned to death for treason for his part in bringing a cure to the disease that threatened to wipe out Europe's dragon population (and at the same time eliminate the threat of Napoleon's invasion). Without Captain Laurence, and his dragon Temeraire, England seems to have no hope.

Inspired by the example of Chinese dragons, Temeraire intends to have dragons recognized as people, with rights to pay, freedom, votes, and to make their own decisions. Napoleon's invasion gives Temeraire far more bargaining ... Read More

If you like fantasy stories filled with magic, adventure and romance, but are getting sick and tired of boring, long-winded fantasy epics, then look no further than "Stardust." There are no long histories, family trees or endless descriptions of culture, landscapes and back-story. This is just a sweet, simple fairytale told by a great storyteller. Though be warned - the original fairytales were not written for children, and "Stardust" follows in their literary footsteps, by including several violent, sensual and bittersweet scenes. It might be tempting to read this book aloud to children (particularly if you've seen the recent movie adaptation), but this is something I would strongly advise against!

Set in the Victorian Era out in the English countryside, the town of Wall is named so because of the simple-looking wall ... Read More
