I got hooked on True Blood on HBO and decided I needed a little more background from Charlaine Harris. The book is great. Written as a young woman would speak and very imaginative and descriptive.
I enjoyed all the twists and turns and would even consider becoming a Fang Banger if given the chance!!

Living Dead in Dallas, the second book in the Southern Vampire series, picks up shortly after the events in Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries, No. 1). Sookie, a cocktail waitress, gets pulled into a dangerous tangle after one of her coworkers turns up as a murder victim. Evidence points to a particular culprit -- but he may not be the guilty party.

Meanwhile, Bill, Sookie's undead lover, has obliged himself to a group of vampires residing in Dallas -- and they demand Sookie's services as a telepath to help track down a vampire gone missing. Sookie complies, because she's with Bill -- his accessory? property? -- and all her ornery words aside, she lets herself be treated that way because she loves Bill.

Oh yeah, and then there's that terrifying creature in ... Read More

What is the matter with the weyrlings? This has, no doubt, been a common complaint for exasperated Weyrlingmasters the past 500 Turns or so, but in this instance there really IS something wrong with the youngsters -- a number of them are frequently inattentive, lack energy, and want to sleep a lot. A handful of the older dragonriders also suffer from this mysterious malady to a degree. Even the newly hatched dragons are sleepier than they ought to be.

Thus begins Todd McCaffrey's "Dragonheart", set at the very start of Pern's Third Pass, in the year (or "Turn") 507 After Landing. At age 13, Fiona, the only surviving child of Bemin, Lord Holder of Fort Hold, has unexpectedly Impressed gold dragon Talenth. As a junior Weyrwoman she has much to learn with little time to spare. ... Read More

As a person who read the previous incarnations of this tale in The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales, it's safe to say that I was already a fan of this book before it was ever released. However, I'm pleased to see that this was more than just a cheap attempt to milk the cow by putting out the same story multiple times as George Lucas keeps doing with his Star Wars re-releases. The Children of Hurin contains several never before seen chapters and illustrations which help to further expand the story.

As it goes, this is probably the darkest of the tales J.R.R. Tolkien ever wrote. It's very bleak and grim, but that's where the magic of this story takes place. Rather than manufacture artificial escapes for the heroes of this book as he did in The Lord of the Rings, the heroes in this ... Read More

You probably already know that Goodkind is preachy. I knew it going in and I can deal with that, even though it kills the feeling of the book. It does bother me that an author will go to great lengths to try and tell a story and wrap the reader into a different world, and then just totally bash the reader in the skull with childish monologues that go for pages where I guess we are supposed to believe that all other characters just patiently wait for the speaker to finish and reach their point. It doesn't matter how many people are present for these tirades, or what the circumstances are (like maybe a tense moment with tempers flaring). We are just supposed to stay wrapped up in this story as if it's plausible. Sorry Mr Goodkind but it isn't. You might as well have said Richard pulls out a gun and starts firing ... Read More

This book is fantastic. I have to read it at least once a year. It is very entertaining, very fun and never gets old. Each time I pick up the book to read it it feels and reads as fresh as it did the first time. Great book for all ages and the best place to start if you are interested in "The Lord of the Rings" or learning more about Middle Earth. I'd recommend this book to everyone and it makes for a wonderful present for any and all occasions.
