I am sad to say I had not read this book till age 27. What was wrong with my high school? No Bell Jar, no 451?

*Anyway* fascinating read and crazy to think that books may be obsolete in the future, quite sad, since I'm an avid reader. The premise of the story is about a fireman who knows nothing else but his job and what life is like now, until he meets a young "strange" girl who discusses actual real life with him. After that, Montag starts to wonder things outside the realm of what he always knew and starts to question his job and the purpose of burning books. He ends up rebelling and fighting for the cause.

If you liked 1984, this book is similar is some aspects (to me at least). The sad bleak future that these authors dreamed up with the loss of individualism ... Read More

It would be easy to say that Laurell K. Hamilton is a bad writer, but that would be untrue. She is a good author and reading some of her earlier works in the Anita Black series you can easily see where she excelled and what propelled the series' popularity. Unfortunately, where these books now fail is in structure.

Telling vs. Showing: A basic tenant for good writing is the ability tell the story through the characters actions and reactions versus an author telling the reader what's happening. After many pages of three way sex, one participant says to another (and main character), Anita Blake: "You are so uncomfortable with sex Anita..." Huh? What?? This after not just any old ménage a' trois, but one tinged with light bondage. The statement just throws the reader off because that ... Read More

I greatly enjoyed this trilogy, and would definitely recommend it to other readers. It does have some complicated themes however, so I would probably lean towards 14 and up for the readers age.
One note, the second book had two pages that were narrower then the rest, and error that obviously occurred in manufacturing, fortunately, the text on the pages is complete. Otherwise a very nice package.

I won't really describe the happenings in this book, because it felt like mostly filler. It was like Charlaine was just preparing us for upcoming books. I enjoyed this only because I love all of the characters, I love the town, and Sookie is a great lead. There were some problems resolved and new problems brought to the surface. These have obviously opened new doors for future books. Lets see, Alcide is finally head of the Were's. Sookie and Quinn solved their relationship dilemma. Sookie is introduced to one of her ancestors. Eric now remembers his past with Sookie. I was hoping more would come out of that last one, but I was left disappointed. The book ends kind of awkwardly, and I'm not really sure what she was trying to tell us or make us feel at the end. All I know is I felt kind of empty ... Read More

I'm going to be totally honest from my own perspective. I love to read, classics and also modern works, but am not one for trashy romance novels. About the mushiest I get is Nicholas Sparks. That being said, this was, in many spots, nothing more than a poorly written (as far as plot and character development are concerned) romance novel that should have been portrayed with two scantily clad lovers embracing on the cover.

I felt like the author used the (badly described) graphic sex scenes as nothing more than filler, because she didn't know how else to portray the relationship between the two lead characters. When I wanted to see how they were getting to know each other on a deeper level, she was writing about their never-ending sex drives. Yeah, sex is important to a healthy relationship, but it was ... This book is not really a horror book filled with gore, but it is a fascinating page turner nonetheless. Through the multiple first person accounts of the battle for survival in a post apocalyptic zombie ruled world, Brooks is able to emerge the reader into a world that has been consumed by the living dead. His references to contemporary foreign policy and his accurate accounting of and maneuvering through the contemporary military mindset and lingo (at least American, according to this former Marine) gives his book a, "Wow, I could see this actually happening!" feel.

And rather than exploring the "LaMOE" (Last Man on Earth) perspective commonly found in zombie media, this delves into every reasonable facet of culture. If there were a WWZ, this book goes very far into encompassing all the elements that ... Read More

Well, I've been waiting for nearly 12 months for this book. I really didn't know what to expect so I had no preconceptions about the plot. I was desperate to find out how the problem of Melisande would be resolved and looked forward to finding out what Machiavellian plot Carey would think up. In the previous 5 books this has been what I enjoyed most - the political machinations, the wicked characters who show no remorse when their actions result in thousands of deaths, the roguish characters who turn out to be loyal, brave and trustworthy and help the hero or heroine save the day.

Did I get any of this? Barely. The main plotline regarding the magic spell was cheap and tawdry. If you think back to Darsanga, the 'magic' there was more spiritual in its origin (albeit from an evil source) but the Carthaginian ... Read More
