For anyone out there wondering who the real Barack Obama is, "The Audacity of Hope" will give you one clear idea. It is part memoir, part political manifesto, encompassing his comprehensive vision for America. The book reveals him to be very smart, well read, compassionate, and sometimes quite funny. I think few people reading the book will agree with him on every policy issue, and no one is really prepared to take on the problems facing our country. But, reading this book gave me faith that the American people have elected a very capable public servant.

Chapters are essays arranged around a single theme (eg "Faith" "Family") and some are better than others. I particularly liked what he had to say about his conversion to Christianity and some of the values he learned being raised ... Read More

Assuming all political positions must be plotted along a horizontal left-right x axis hurts the argument of this book. Rather, consider a four-sided model composed of x and y axes, where the familiar left/liberal and right/conservative positions are flanked on the north and south by libertarian/individualist and authoritarian/collectivist positions.

We can then account for the fact that both left and right can be guilty of so-called 'fascist' authoritarian/collectivist thinking in their ranks. We usually call it "totalitarian" when it occurs on the left, and "fascist" when it occurs on the right, for good reasons. Fascism was philosophically rooted in vitalism, rule by the physically better or stronger, where totalitarianism was supposed to be rule by the smarter or 'more rational'. So ... Read More

Very well written and keeps your attention. Very detailed and fact based. The author is as unbiased as they come. I came into this book embarassingly ignorant about international politics, especially the events leading up to September 11, 2001. I feel thankful toward the author for putting together such complex information in a straight forward, but captivating way - a way that lets even the most unaware reader begin to understand the whirlwind of money, politics, fanaticism, and international counter-interests that intersect to create the horrors of tomorrow. I was amazed at how much the US government played a hand in fostering Taliban and al Qaeda. A hand full of tunnel vissioned, post cold-war mongering CIA agents and senators operating with a unconscionable amount power financed, encouraged, and ... Read More

This book is incredibly hilarious, if you "get" Stephen Colbert's type of humor. If you like his show, you'll love this book. His tongue-in-cheek, extreme rightwing pundit character is just as politically incorrect as ever, and just so so funny. Complete with his opinion everywhere, including in the margins, it encompasses everything we love about "The Colbert Report." Aside from a few distracting typos (which, according to one sentence in the end of the book, may or may not have been put there on purpose), I found this an easy read and unbelievably fun way to spend my time, and I kept wishing the book was longer, or -- better yet-- that there was a sequel. I hope he writes another. I liked it so much, I bought some as gifts for friends.

Writers who can put together an argument either in favor of or against a political candidate seem to surface around presidential election time. This book is a one sided viewpoint written by political reporter for National Review Online, David Freddoso, The Case Against Barack Obama. This captivating chronology of Obama's career presents a history of the meteoric rise to fame of an obscure newcomer who now stands on the threshold of claiming the number one prize in American politics, President of the United States.

Freddoso cleverly provides insinuations which try to have the reader to draw, but one conclusion, Barack Obama uses poor judgment in the selection of his friends and supporters. Association with questionable people who supported his political and personal ambitions is presented in a manner ... Read More

This book is a must read for every American that loves their country and desires to see change that takes us to the next level. Newt's ideas are great! If we would heed his advice we would have a better America. I wish he would run for President but realized he will be most effective by not being stuck in the presidency.

I got interested in this book when I saw Scott McClellan on "Meet the Press" one morning. It was either Tim Russert's last or next-to-last show before he died suddenly.

I didn't know what to expect from Mr. McClellan, so I watched. I was amazed to see a guy that seemed to be expressing genuine regret to the American people for letting them down. It wasn't exactly his fault, but he does seem to blame himself to some degree. Anyway, I was intrigued by his sincerity--and not only that, but his apparent forthrightness and honesty.

So when I saw the book at the library, I picked it up, and got very interested after just a few pages--you know, the way you do when you read a thriller-type novel. I enjoyed the book for the following reasons:

-It's well written. Good writing is always enjoyable ... Read More

This is an outstanding and thoroughly entertaining history of American politics and culture (and how they intertwine) between 1964 - 1972. He details how Nixon succeeded as a politician because he learned lessons early on how to exploit people's fears for his gain. The main premise is that this strategy created the primary ideological divide--think liberal vs. conservative or blue vs. red--that exists in American today. Final paragraph: "How does Nixonland end? It has not ended yet." Even though this premise doesn't always hold up, I still cannot recommend this book highly enough.
