The authors once again have written a fine book which looks at landmark closing arguments. In this book, the third in their series, they focus on noteworthy crimes that formed the basis for trials. You will read the closing argument of Clarence Darrow, one of the 20th Century's most famous lawyers, that he gave in 1925 when he defended an African-American family that shot at a mob that was attacking their home. What I really liked about the book is that the authors put each trial in the social context in which it took place. In the example above, the authors give the reader a great insight to the racial tensions that existed in 1925 which provides needed background in order to understand the significance of the trial.

This book is awesome, a must read for anyone who is thinking about becoming a lawyer. Even if you are not sure about being a lawyer, but wish to know a little more about how understanding our legal system can keep you from being taken advantage of in wake of any type of disaster. I had to read it for class, and I am glad that I did. Paralegals can benefit from this book as well; as most of the researching of case law is conducted by paralegals. You get a sense of what to look for in your research. I cannot get enough of this book.

Paul A. Lombardo's recently published book, "Three Generations, No Imbeciles: Eugenics, the Supreme Court, and Buck v. Bell" is a poignant retelling of the court decisions regarding the forced sterilization of a young woman named Carrie Buck. Although written objectively, Lombardo's heart comes through, making the book readable for even a law novice. The book was easily comprehensible. Credit Lombardo's masterful ability to reiterate facts at just the right moment with keeping the reader on track in understanding the key people, issues, and details.
The subject is heart breaking. Lombardo's persistence in getting this story out with painstaking attention to the groundwork is moving. By the time the first trial occurs in the book, the reader has ample information to know what all principals ... Read More

I would like to encourage anyone who buys this book to at least do yourself the favor of reading some standard historical works related to Islamic history, especially those parts which Noah Feldman uses to support his thesis in this book. If Feldman had submitted this work to any peer-reviewed scholarly journal it would have been rejected, as it is filled with unsupported characterizations, historical inaccuracies and, where there is sourcing at all, endnotes which do not support his thesis. This work is so professionally negligent that I would encourage any potential employer to review this book and its documentation before hiring him.

In providing some examples, I'll break them down roughly into Feldman's outline:

"WHAT WENT RIGHT?" - pages 17-56 discuss how important Islamic ... Read More

Wow. What a great commentary. There is so much here that I have an even stronger appreciation for canon law than I did before. I am studying to be a priest and this book is really proving to be invaluable. And this is proving to be an invaluable help. There is history of the code, comparisons with the 1917 code and the code of the Eastern church. Really indepth and almost too much...almost.

This book is a classic that has been used in seminary Old Testament classes for two decades. This book is a great resource for anyone interested in Old Testament and comparative religious studies. Victor Matthews is a great scholar who takes the Bible very seriously. What you will find in this book is all the stories of the OT compared to similar stories from pagan mythology. Most books like this just paraphrase these myths or compare them on T-charts to Bible stories with the intention of showing similarities or differences. In this book, you get to read the myths for yourself and make up your own mind about the significance of the parallels. You might also look into the "IVP Bible Background Commentary" which Matthews co-authored. If you are just get started in Old Testament studies, I would also recommend the following:

It may seem at times as if Islamic political thought has been captured by Qutb, Maududi, and their intellectual descendents. It is hard to remember that from about 1840 to 1940 (the period that Hourani terms the "Liberal Age"), the dominant strain in Muslim political thinking was comprised of the work of Tahtawi, Kayr al-Din, Afghani, Abduh, and Rida, who struggled above all to combine the moral weight of Islam with the science and rationalism of the West. Their goal was to create societies that were progressive and humanist while remaining identifiably Islamic.

The failure of the Islamic modernists was not going far enough -- not finding a new understanding of Islam's relationship to both the socio-historical world and the physical universe. An-Naim is clearly working in this Islamic liberal tradition, but his work has ... Read More
