1.One Art: Letters of Elizabeth Bishop by: Elizabeth Bishop

Books : One Art: Letters of Elizabeth Bishop
I was a junior in college when I first read this book and subsequently viewed some of Elizabeth Bishop's handwritten poems/manuscripts/letters, etc. at the New York Public Library's Hand of the Poet exhibit. I was in love, enthralled, forever changed by this amazing woman's poems and her voice. These letters are an intimate look into the life of one of the most talented and elusive poets of the 20th Century. What a life of heartbreak and obstacle and yet she remained keenly interested in the human challenge--and amazingly connected to those she knew. In this age where the art of communication has been nearly wholly lost, to read this collection of letters is like stepping back in time. Bishop reminds us that the most important connections are those we make with others--and that taking the time ... Read More

Letter Home contains all of the letters that Sylvia wrote to her Mother, Warren and Mrs Prouty from 1950-1963 and span her university life, up to her marriage to Ted Hughes and beyond.
The best thing about this book is the enthusiasm for study, success and a family that Plath shows in the letters.
As a fan I often imagine her as a moody person like her poems sometimes suggests but Plath appears happy and full of life and love in each letter.
I particularly enjoyed the letters from the time she met Ted and started a family with him as their plans and gaining success were so well deserved and interesting.
Letters Home comes with an introduction by Plath's Mother who also adds a few bits of context throughout.
I stopped reading after the birth of her second child as the ... Read More

I purchased this book as a birthday gift for a relative who began showing it to other family members. I received calls from several relatives inquiring why they didn't receive the book for their birthday. To make a long story short, I ended up purchasing 6 more copies to give as gifts.I finally had to tell the rest of my relatives they could purchase their own copy on-line at [...].

I just finished "Letters" and I gotta say, what a tremendous book!! It is a different text than ones previously written by Jim and truthfully, I was exceptionally impressed by the intimacy. Mr. Burke reveals so much of his true self -- both as a person and as a classroom educator -- that I now feel like I know him as a friend now that I have read this book. In certain places, it's literally like a stealing a wonderful glimpse into a man's soul -- really good stuff!!!

Obviously, Jim has a gift for words. The voice of the book is strong, distinct and nakedly honest-which I absolutely loved. If there is one element which might have been my favorite, it's the fact that Jim never skirts away from the confusion, the lack of surety and the imprecision of our profession. (NOTE: I am a teacher as well.) ... Read More

I did not expect to like this book. I had avoided reading it for some time, thinking it would be dull, pedantic, not worth the effort it might take to read it, and generally unpleasant.

I am so glad I found out I was wrong.

It's actually enthralling, well-done, and a worthwhile addition to anyone's library. I am not generally fond of ultra-personal non-fiction, or of the twentieth century in general, but _Letters of the Century_ overcame all of my doubts. The explanatory paragraphs and notes are extremely helpful; the letters are generally of medium length, diverse in subject matter, and uniformly fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it.

As someone I would love to have known, Martha Gelhorn ranks right up there with Carly Simon...who, thankfully, is still alive. She is the only one of Hemingway's four wives who left him. This after an affair-turned-to-marriage that began when she walked into a Key West bar and introduced herself to him.

Her extensive correspondence detailed in this book, and her life subsequent to Hemingway, reveal a woman, who though emotionally healthier than Ernest, had her own demons to contend with. She is nevertheless a fascinating personality, widely traveled, a prolific author, and by all accounts a very engaging raconteur. She deserves to be notable in her own right and spent much of her life in a fight to be accorded someone other than Heminway's third wife. Though with a personage as large as Hemingway, that was ... 8.Anne Sexton: A Self-Portrait in Letters by: Anne Sexton

Books : Anne Sexton: A Self-Portrait in Letters
I first heard about Anne Sexton in one of my American Literature classes in college when we studied some of her works. Even though I was interested in a few of her poems at the time, I was quick to put her (and her writing) out of my mind. It wasn't until a few years later that I rediscovered Anne in a local bookstore; I happened to see a book called "Anne Sexton: A Self-Portrait in Letters." Curious, I flipped through some of the pages and started reading fragments of her letters. Moments later, I decided that I wanted to purchase the book. Though it took me a while to read the biography, I became fascinated with Anne and all aspects of her life. The fact that this biography explores both her personal and professional life attracted me as a reader. The title, in itself, is interesting because it caught my attention, and I had ... Read More

10.Screams from the Balcony: Selected Letters 1960-1970 by: Charles Bukowski

Books : Screams from the Balcony: Selected Letters 1960-1970
This truly is a great book, a must for Bukowski fans and a book to which I have found myself returning many times over the years. It starts off very sedate in the 60s, with a meek Bukowski writing well-mannered letters to people from small presses, but he gathers in steam and anger as the book goes along until by halfway through he is writing endless drunken stream-of-consciousness scream-of-semiconsciousness ramblerants to all and sundry, using his typewriter as a machinegun to fire syllabic bullets and howl from his cage and keep a small part of himself alive.

The uncensored inebriated letters he composes are brilliant, funny and poignant and erudite and poetic and stupid and depressing in turns, and he unfailingly tells the truth, no matter what the subject under discussion. His prized loner status is somewhat undermined by the sheer ... Read More
