When I first started reading this, I was going to give it only two stars. The first seven stories were very slow for me to get through. They were not really scary or even interesting in the way King can be interesting in a non-horror fiction story as in Different Seasons. Also, I feel the first seven would have been fine if they had been written by a first published writer. King is a seasoned professional so therefore I was expecting more. My expectations weren't high to begin with. I do think the editor should have done his job much better when putting together this book.
When I started reading N, it got my attention. I had already read Machen The Great God Pan, so I knew where the story was coming from. Sometimes it helps to know the source material first.

2.The Hour I First Believed: A Novel by: Wally Lamb

Maybe it was they hype. Before I read the book, I read a review calling it Lamb's best novel to date. I loved his first two so I went into this one with high expectations. Unfortunately it did not live up. The main problem for me was that Lamb never made me care about the two main characters. It wasn't that I didn't like Maureen and Caelum. I just didn't care about them. You know it's bad when you find out a truly deep and scandalous secret about the main character's past and you just. Don't. Care. The end had me skimming the pages, flipping through, just trying to get the thing done.

The book is also deeply depressing. I suppose the last line is supposed to leave us with a sense of hope, but asking one line to stand up to 700 pages of sadness and meaningless loss is too much.

I have just finished reading this delightful book and am still smiling. Although the story has a sadness to it because of the subject matter. It takes place for the most-part during World War II and the German occupation of Guernsey Island in the Channel Islands and the experiences of the people that lived there. It is a captivating novel with wonderful characters and a wonderful story line! A joy for all to read! I couldn't wait to tell my reader friends about this charming book!

This book is above average and well worth the reader's time. Some reviewers think its one of the all-time greats, but I wouldn't go that far. Its too naive and unrealistic at times and jarringly anachronistic at others. I realize that when reading fiction the reader should just let themselves be carried along and suspend disbelief and all that. But Ms. Kidd wrote some passages that just snap the reader out of their reverie. For example, I'm not sure Zach and Lily could ride around town together in the Boatwright's truck without serious consequences for Zach. Surely August and June would know better than that. Any interracial relationships would've had to be as private as possible back then, I think. Also, this book has that same notion of kindly, wise and mystical-seeming black people imparting life-altering knowledge ... Read More

i thought this book moved painfully slow. i loved sex and the city and now lipstick jungle...so i thought i would like this book too. this was my first time ever reading a candace bushnell book and it will probably be the last time. i will say that once i got about 3/4 into it i couldn't put it down.

Normally I enjoy literary novels and good writing. I don't require a lot of action, flashy settings, glamourous characters, or what have you.

I was disappointed to find Home simply tedious. Very little action, repetitive dialogue, nothing to enjoy in any of the characters, nothing even to look forward to for their futures (either for them or for us.)

If you enjoy reading about theological debates circa 1950, thinly veiled Bible-based racism, figurative hair-shirt-wearing, uncontrolled weeping, and crotchety but not feisty old men, by all means pick up Home.

I found it to be the literary equivalent of a big spoonful of cod liver oil: probably not without hidden healthful qualities, but requiring a good deal of determination to choke it down.

What a wonderful, terrible, brilliant, horrible, frustrating, fascinating story. Jesus wept. It's also heart-felt, humorous, whimsical, and a masterpiece. Jesus smiled.

This is another great piece of writng by DeMille. At first I found myself a little disappointed because the story line seemed to drag with the rich history of the Gold Coast described in detail.

But the story got much better and DeMille's words flowed easily through my mind and created a wonderful story. This story was based in the rich Gold Coast of Long Island, but the heart of the story was not about The Gold Coast. It was about a Mafia Don, Frank Bellarosa who bought a huge mansion next to John Sutter, a Wall Street Tax lawyer. The heart of the story was not the Mafia Don, but it was about John Sutter as told by him and how all of this came to intertwine. John Sutter was bored with his life, just as any of us could be and he got involved with his new exciting neighbor and it changed his life forever.
