My subject title says it all. This book explores the full range of human emotions in an account so spectacular and gut wrenching that it defies belief.

The story is dutifully told and well narrated by Mr. MacQuarrie without being overly dramatic. He has researched the facts with the most accurate material and evidence available to recreate what exactly happened over the course of the 90 year decline of the Inca Empire at the hands of what could be most accurately described as blood thirsty, illiterate, murdering hooligans. The facts themselves are the most amazing aspects of the book and Mr. MacQuarrie serves as our guide through the events that explore a cardinally sinful range of human emotions; Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. Throw in complete improbability, ... Read More

Just wondering why a rebuttal to the pro-"La Raza" racism found in the previous posts was deleted while Miguel's anti-Christian rhetoric is allowed to stand. I have a whole lot of Mexican brothers and sisters who are proud of who they are without throwing whitey (and Jesus) in the dirt.

PC at its best, I suppose. Never mind my order. I can find it cheaper at Wal-Mart.

Books : Reading the Maya Glyphs
Perhaps the problem lies less with the authors and more with the language, but I suspect both are guilty of making this study of Maya glyphs as enjoyable as mowing a near vertical lawn in 100 degree weather. Imagine being asked to name and recognize each of the 101 Dalmations (with the understanding that sometimes any dalmation could alternately appear as a collie or unicorn or frog or loaf of bread OR any of those things turned upside down or stuck to the wall with velcro or distorted as if pushed up against a glass wall from behind). Add to that a series of cryptic lessons on linguistic esoterica designed to give you fits and several exercises to show that you will never make any progress here (and ought to question whether or not you have early Alzheimers or something equally dreadful that could explain why ... I really savored every page of this book. One of the best I have EVER read on both an OVERVIEW of american prehistory, and american archaeology. Addresses all the important questions, and most importantly to me, the author seems very unbiased. At FIRST i thought he was going to be definitely a Pro-Native American viewpoint, since Prof. Vine Deloria wrote the foreward. However, although the authoer is PC, he is in such a way as not to be "in your face" with it. I think a very balanced book. I will keep my copy handy and refer to it often, as it is a truly VALUABLE resource! I understand more of the political ramification so of the government vs the Indians now, and the author told it in a way so as not to bore you to tears. Very well done, and my sincere, heartfelt compliments to the author, for a job well done.

The book is written in elaborate English - not easy to read but very elegant. Although it is supposed to be an introduction it should be read at least two times to fertilize one's mind. Author present his vision of Peruvian prehistory in a "reversed" order. He begins with Incas (1/5 of the whole book) to continue with plethora of their ancestors. As a result a reader gets a nice patchwork of archaeological-based definitions and life-giving interpretations. Some out-of-date details are perhaps only in my edition (2001).

I wondered as i was reading this book how it was that the Aztecs who had historically recorded populations of 100,000 plus, never had a terrible ecological disaster as the Mayan civilization supposedly did.Surely with Aztecan confederacy type populations there must have been a high use/misuse of resources. Could it be that the Aztecs had thought out a way to avoid such disasters as faced the Mayan civilations.Probably?
One way was the setting aside of large areas of timber and etc. and designating them as sacred so people could not inhabit them without offending the Gods. This seems like an early form of todays National Parks, the Aztecs therefore early consevationists. These are some of the type interpretations a person could gather from reading Townsends' book.Tenochtitlan while no doubt an architectural splendour, would not have downgraded to ...
