Patrick Hunt put together a delightful little book from the themes he covers in a popular college course, Ten Discoveries That Rewrote History. This well written book takes the reader on a journey across the globe and back and forth through time.

As a Biblical historian, I found the text not overly academic without shirking responsibilities of noting cultural context and impact on traditional understanding in various schools of thought. Hunt chronicles such discoveries as the Terracotta Warriors, the Rosetta Stone and Machu Picchu and their effect on science, history and popular culture.

Hunt's book gives meaningful information that will serve all readers well regardless, of their walk of life. If it doesn't make you fantasize about being Indiana Jones, it will ... Read More

2.A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya by: Linda Schele, David Freidel

Books : A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya
Note: It looks like I have offended some Mormons who don't want you to read this book. Nevertheless, science won't go away. Your "helpful" votes are appreciated

Schele and Freidel's book takes you into the mind of the ancient Maya, where bloodletting induced visions that opened doors into the world of pagan spirits and everyone had an animal "familiar."

The description of the "War of Conquest" of Tikal (tee-kal) against Uaactun (wa-shak-toon) is riviting. It is fascinating that we know the name of the general of Tikal, "Smoking-Frog." At other places, we now also know the names of the Maya leaders. "Ah Zacol...governed Lacanja for Knot-eye-Jaguar, the king of Bonampak." Other names are equally strange. I won't list the name of one king because Amazon's filter's would ... Read More

This stunning comapnion book is a must for all King Tut fans. We JUST returned from the exhibit in Dallas, Texas (Dallas Museum of Art). Missed it in LA in 1978, but was NOT going to let this exhibit get away.
Fabulous book.....

Ok, first the standard disclaimer: I am one of the contributors of one short essay to this volume...so I won't review my own essay on Blood Run National Historic Landmark ;-) However, there are over 370 sites and essays from every region and every era of the United States in this encyclopediac volume, except for Alaska and Hawaii. The indigenous people of Hawaii are not counted as Native American; it is uncertain why the Native Americans of Alaska were not included. All the profits from this book are being donated to the National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall, a part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

The thing that strikes me is that each essay was written by a tribal member or scholar who is especially knowledgeable about, and connected to, the ... Read More

This is a very interesting and engrossing analysis of the skeletal remains from the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The authors have handled their material well, except for the repetitiveness. It's as if each wrote something for the book and everything was then used somewhere in it instead of being edited to produce a comprehensive whole book. The section on comparison of the skeletal remains from the Battle with skeletons from other contexts from the Old West was a bit of a drag and perhaps overanalyzed. I didn't see how it was terribly relevant to the who or the what of the Battle bones. But the authors are good writers and this was worth the read. I would have liked to know more about the Native casualties, but this receives short shrift in a couple of paragraphs. Also there was no discussion about the ... Read More

7.Ghosts of Vesuvius: A New Look at the Last Days of Pompeii, How Towers Fall, and Other Strange Connections by: Charles R. Pellegrino

Books : Ghosts of Vesuvius: A New Look at the Last Days of Pompeii, How Towers Fall, and Other Strange Connections
[Review of Hardcover edition]

This is a tremendously interesting and engrossing book, on many different levels. "GoV", contrary to what the title might lead one to suspect, is NOT just a book about Mt. Vesuvius - it's a tour de force exploration of the effect of volcanic forces on people, on civilizations, on religion(s), on species and evolution in general, on the landscape, and even on the very formation of life itself ... and the author draws upon a wide array of scientific disciplines in order to tell the tale effectively.

In similar fashion to Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe", the book opens with a bang ... or more specifically, with the origins of the universe, the formation of heavier elements in the hearts of stars, the evolution of solid matter (planets, asteroids and dark ... Read More

I grew up in Nova Scotia, not far from Oak Island and have been interested in the mysterious money pit since the 1950's.Since those days, there has been a continual stream of events, searchings and reports of attempts to solve, evidence reported, stories and books written;but the solution to the mystery is as elusive, but enticing as it was when the search first commenced in 1795.
Several years ago, I became interested in the Knights Templar and the history of their times, as well as the connections with the present day Freemasons and many other secret societies. One doesn't research much about these things without soon discovering the interconnections that endlessly appear.
Is it all nonsense? Absolutely not.The Knights Templar were real. They were persecuted, many secret societies were formed, and still exist, great ... Read More

9.The Extraordinary Voyage of Pytheas the Greek by: Barry Cunliffe

Books : The Extraordinary Voyage of Pytheas the Greek

Pytheas was a native of the Greek colony of Massalia (Marseilles), who may have made a remarkable journey around the Atlantic coast of Europe 2,300 years ago. His book has been lost, no fragments survive, and he is known to us only through commentators. He apparently visited Britain -- the "man who discovered Britain" according to the subtitle -- and traveled to Iceland and Denmark.

Others had traveled outside the Mediterranean in that era. The Pharaoh Necho II in about 600 BC arranged for some Phoenician ships to circumnavigate Africa. Several hundred years later Carthaginians sailed as far as the the Sargasso Sea.

The Greeks were concerned about their supplies of tin and amber. The Carthaginians threatened the closure of the straits of Gibraltar as the Greeks expanded westward. Cunliffe seeks to recreate Pytheas' ... Read More

10.On the Road of the Winds: An Archaeological History of the Pacific Islands before European Contact by: Patrick Vinton Kirch

Books : On the Road of the Winds: An Archaeological History of the Pacific Islands before European Contact
The pacific islands and people who inhabit them have long been viewed as seperate, isolated and somehow different from the rest of the world's civilizations. Patrick Kirch takes this view into contest in this revolutionizing book on the pre-history of Oceania.

He collects a myraid of information about life in the islands before European contact and strives to present it, not as isolated bits of evidence, but as pieces of a cohesive whole. These pieces can be fit together to give a greater understanding of the culture of Pacific Islanders and help place them as an intricate portion of humanities story, not as a group of people untouched and unrelated to the rest of the world.

Kirch shows that the culture and past of the people who came to inhabite the islands of the pacific are unique. But, he also contends that Pacific Islanders ... Read More
